  • Fraser Riverkeepers Gala

Swim. Drink. Fish. The message was as crisp and clear as the waters they are trying to protect. The Fraser Riverkeepers Gala, held at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia in Vancouver, was a delight for all the senses. Fabulous food, famous faces and a live music lineup that rivals most award shows – this was a night to remember as every detail helped remind us that our waterways, rivers, oceans and streams are one of the Earth’s most valuable commodities.

  • Brightlight Pictures Anniversary Party

He’s known for producing movies like The Interview, with Seth Rogen and James Franco, Horns, with Daniel Radcliffe, White Noise, with Michael Keaton, and more. Brightlight Pictures executive Shawn Williamson is no stranger to the movie scene here in Vancouver and Hollywood, so what better way to celebrate his 15 year anniversary than with an invite only VIP party here at home. Congratulations Shawn, we love seeing you on the big screen.

  • Dueck Cadillac Launch Party

Sports, cars and fashion – it was all a part of the recent Dueck GM / Cadillac launch party. VIP guests were greeted with black tie service as all the sales staff were dressed to the nines and looking good! • Vancouver Canucks Autism – West Coast Fishing Club

Have you heard a good fish story lately? This one is the best. • John Daly Global TV Retirement

He’s one of the most trusted veteran newsmen out there – but now another legend is leaving the airwaves. John Daly, senior reporter for Global TV, will be dearly missed. Breaking stories from the likes of government scandal to crime facts and figures, Daly has seen it all. Last month friends, family and co-workers toasted the man behind the mission at a special event complete with champagne, food and fun. Look for Daly at his next big project soon.

  • Vancouver Leo Awards – BC’s Oscars and Emmys

Leo Awards Vancouver – I’ve always said they’re like our own version of the Oscars and Emmys. The Leo Awards, now in their 17th year, celebrated the best in BC with all the red carpet glam that goes with Hollywood North. Held at the Hyatt hotel – actors, directors, writers and producers strutted their stuff for the cameras and for the right to hold a coveted Leo Award. Three star-studded nights included live music, guest presenters a formal dinner and more. Congrats to everyone involved.

  • Inherent Vice Starring Joaquin Phoenix

Last night it was the exclusive Warner Brothers premiere of Inherent Vice in Vancouver.

It was a fun hippy-trippy ride with excellent acting. Look to Joaquin Phoenix to get an Oscar nod here. Josh Brolin was also excellent coming close to stealing several scenes (pancakes!).

If you liked The Big Lebowski, you’ll like this.

It’s a little slow in places, a little long, and a little convoluted (I still can’t quite figure out Owen Wilson’s character) – and the characters smoke so much pot you come away high just from watching it. There is also some Tarantino-esque dialogue that reminds you of Pulp Fiction, but it doesn’t get too bogged down here (thankfully) trying to mimic this.

It does have some real moments of brilliance – and has lots of hilarious dark comedy, classic lines and hippy era poetry all steeped in rich 70s kitsch. The cinematography also works and I truly felt drawn into each scene.

I don’t know whether it was the large screen and/or high definition cameras we’re all using now, but I liked how the camera people made no apologies for showing everybody’s less-than-perfect complexions. There was no mistaking it.

Lots of close ups means you couldn’t ignore the false eyelashes that were everywhere! For me, the contrast between their “natural-ness” and “overdone-ness” (and over-indulgence) is a big part of the “what’s real and what isn’t” scenario. And despite the already trendy 70s feel that seems to be coming back into style – look to this movie to solidify the sales of extra big false eyelashes and pale nude lipstick on women.

Worth the price of admission – yes!

Thank you Warner Brothers for a great night and to The Lazy Gourmet for the fun reception (truffle popcorn, wine, canapes). Also, thank you to SFU for letting us use your fabulous new theatre. Wow!

    Opens tomorrow (Friday) in Vancouver.

    Check out the trailer:

  • Michael Buble in Vancouver

I am a huge fan of MartiniInTheMorning.com radio out of California. Having recently become “friends” with the station’s main man, Brad “Martini” Chamber, I was only to happy to throw Michael Buble a question about the station and the new era of digital music at a recent press conference.

As you will see from the video, Michael is also a big fan of the station and of digital music. He even tells how his grandfather is downloading music off of iTunes now. Michael also shares his favourite “crooner” songs to sing.

Michael held a press conference in Vancouver, BC, on Jun 18, 2014 to help celebrate the kick-off of his latest tour.

  • Harry Hamlin, Terrence Howard, Billy Baldwin Headline Celebrity Variety Car Rally in Vancouver

Hollywood celebrities, sports stars and some of Vancouver’s most beautiful people were all putting the pedal to the metal last weekend as the Variety for Kids rally hit the streets of town. Headed up by honourary co-chairs Kyle & Janelle Washington, the two-day adventure saw each team/car raise $25,000+ each to support the kids. Then, it was time to draft your celebrity driver and head out on the highway. Think “Amazing Race” meets scavenger hunt. The big kick-off party was held at the new Coal Harbour Cactus Club where everyone parked their luxury cars and then walked the red carpet for the cameras. Inside, it was nothing but good fun as celebs met their teams, posed for pics and enjoyed amazing food and drinks courtesy celebrity chef Rob Feenie and his crew.

04 – Known for “LA Law”, and most recently “Mad Men”, actor Harry Hamlin poses with Variety Rally guest Christie King.

05 – Oscar nominated actor Terrence Howard, of “Ironman” and “Crash” movie fame, sits with model/personality Rachelle Leah as they wait to meet their team members.

06 – Start your engines! Saskatchewan born actor Kim Coates, of “Sons of Anarchy” fame, gets revved up on the red carpet with the Variety Rally Car Girls.

  • Regency Lexus Luxury Gala Opening

Vancouver’s Ahamed family is well known for their generosity and philanthropy with many charity events in Vancouver. They are also well known for their Regency automobile empire which includes brands like Toyota, Volkswagen, Infiniti, Nissan and Lexus. Last week, at the opening of their new Regency Lexus flagship store on Burrard, the family welcomed dignitaries, celebs and VIP guests to share in the special event. Black tie butlers greeted guests as everyone was handed a special passport card to tour the new facilities. Among them, the new “butler” car service. There was also a Yamaha piano lounge and special ribbon cutting ceremony. The most touching moment of the night came when the family made a heartfelt donation to BC Children’s Hospital for $20,000. Congrats everyone!

  • Dan Aykroyd and Hillary Clinton Gala

Celebrities in town this month brought out the who’s who of the North Shore and Vancouver. First up, a visit by one of the most powerful ladies in the U.S., Hillary Clinton. The Vancouver Board of Trade / Women’s Leadership Circle event was one of the most successful events ever held by the board. A private VIP meet and greet and then after event reception allowed everyone to talk about the lady that very well may become the next President of the United States. Next up, actor/comedian Dan Aykroyd played bartender to an invited list of guests at the Vancouver Club as part of a special Crystal Head Vodka launch event. Entertaining and personable, it was a joy to interview him about his career, his famous friends and his cocktails.

  • Vancouver Police Gala

There were police cars everywhere, sirens, flashing lights, and even live gunfire. The Vancouver Police Foundation’s Night Patrol Gala was held last week at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Riot police and helicopters escorted guests to their tables just before emergency responders arrived with dogs and machine guns to put on a very realistic hostage takedown. It was an exciting beginning to a night that also honoured the VPD’s Vancouver Police Pipe Band on their 100th anniversary. After the dinner and live auction, West Vancouver’s famous singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan entertained alongside members of the pipe band. A magical evening that won’t soon be forgotten.

  • Olympic 2010 Memories at XL Summit Leadership Party

It’s been a time of Olympic celebrations as Sochi 2014 celebrates the best in winter sports and achievement. Hard to believe that it was only four short years ago that Vancouver was in the world spotlight showing off our city and its people. Reliving the moments was all part of the theme at the recent XL Leadership Summit opening night reception event. Sponsored by the TwentyTen Group, the night was filled with the who’s who of Vancouver 2010 as everyone remembered the good times and laughed at the fun. The evening also marked the anniversary of the 2010 Opening Ceremonies as John Furlong took to the stage to share some rare behind-the-scenes stories. There was also a special announcement in store as TwentyTen Group founder Andrea Shaw took to the stage to say that the Olympic flame would be lit that night, and every other night, that Canadians won gold in Sochi. Go Canada!

04 – Swimmer Mark Tewksbury is a gold, silver and bronze medallist and a member of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. How great to meet him in person.

  • Dawn Wells, Roberto Alomar and Fred McGriff in Vancouver

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale . . . Gilligan’s Island actress Dawn Wells was just one of the main draws this past weekend as the Vancouver International Boat Show set up shop at both BC Place and Granville Island. Known for its luxury yachts and famous faces, the four-day event attracted hundreds of water loving enthusiasts and outdoor fans. Also, last week marked the 4th Annual Scotiabank Vancouver Canadians Hot Stove Luncheon. Baseball greats Roberto Alomar and Fred McGriff were the guests of honour at this fun fundraiser which helps raise money for their “Building Community Through Baseball” campaign in support of young baseball fans ages 5-10.

This day, he enjoys lunch with Vancouver Canadians Baseball League commissioner Bill MacLagan, centre, and former Blue Jays player and MLB Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar at the Hot Seat Lunch.

02 – No doubt about it, everyone loves Mary Ann. Gilligan’s Island star Dawn Wells is easily the most adored item at this year’s boat show. And at 75 years young, she is still as sweet and beautiful as ever.

  • Golden Globes 2014 – Cat Calls

The first big awards show of the 2014 season, the Golden Globes, is officially over. As always, everyone was talking about the red carpet hits and misses, the big winners, and the big sinners. American Hustle walked away with the most hardware and Cecil B. DeMille honouree Woody Allen didn’t show up, but the gossip doesn’t stop there. Here’s how this Cat called it:

Too Many Shots of U2’s Bono
I seriously think the camera crew was in love as they cut to the music icon sitting in the audience almost every segment. He received almost more screen time than the hosts. Speaking of which . . .

More Tina Fey and Amy Poehler
The girls lived up to their dynamic duo name and got big laughs during their opening monologue. Later, Poehler dressed up as a teenage boy and Fey’s love child and proceeded to walk among the audience looking for her real father. That was about it though. I thought they were very funny and would have liked to see them get more stage time.

    Jacqueline Bisset Hot Mess
After looking truly shocked that she won Best Supporting Actress in a TV Show, Miniseries or TV Movie, veteran British actress Jacqueline Bisset made everyone wait as she lollygagged her way onto the stage only to give a horrendous thank you speech that made her appear completely incompetent. She was even bleeped for using the “S” word.

    P Diddy, Usher and Kate
Poor Kate Beckinsale. She didn’t stand a chance of getting near the microphone with these two egomaniacs on stage. Usher muscled himself into the centre position for the first award – after which P Diddy “voice bombed” the winner. Next, Puffy muscled out Usher for the second award and again refused to shut up after the winner was announced. Rude. Ungentlemanly. Greedy. I would have like to see Kate in the middle and she should have announced the winner each time.

Diane Keaton’s Lame Speech and Song
No one was expecting Woody Allen to actually show up for his award, but when Diane Keaton showed up in his place I at least expected something interesting. How bad was it? To quote Keaton directly “If Woody saw this he’d say ‘Get the hook and get her the [bleep] off the stage’”. Ending with the song “Make new friends, but keep the old” was just the icing on the cake. Also hated the girl tux she wore. Ugh.

Best Dressed – Amy Adams, Jessica Chastain, Kate Beckinsale, Margot Robbie.

Golden Globes 2014 - Best Dressed

There were so many good gowns to choose from but these ladies topped everyone opting for classic lines, elegant fabrics and daring details. Cate Blanchett and Mila Kunis get runner-up mentions here also.

Worst Dressed – Drew Barrymore, Jessica Lange, Kaley Cuoco and Zooey Deschanel

Golden Globes 2014 - Worst Dressed

This is definitely a case of love the actress, hate the dress. Drew Barrymore, I know you’re pregnant but this dress, and that orange-red lipstick and shoes, did not work. Jessica Lange looked frumpy in velvet. Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco tried to be daring but her dress just looked like a big cheap tattoo. And Zooey, this isn’t your fault, I just hate hate hate boxy crop tops and cap sleeves even if they are Oscar de la Renta. Also close runner ups here were Jennifer Lawrence, who has an awesome body and didn’t need the big white kleenex-meets-sausage dress, and Julia Roberts just because I didn’t like the shirt-under-a-ballgown look either.

Counting Number of Times Red Carpet Hosts Said the Word “Amazing”
Thanks to the NBC feed, we were stuck watching Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie and Tamron Hall on the red carpet this year. Going through the paces, I think they told everyone they interviewed how “amazing” their dress/movie/performance was this year. Boring. Would have made for a good drinking game though.

    Leonard DiCaprio
Love him or hate him, Leo is bank. His acceptance speech for winning Best Actor, Motion Picture, Comedy for The Wolf of Wall Street was one of the evening’s most elegant. But I do think it’s about time he stopped dating his Mom.

    Paula Patton Nipple Shot
Have stylists and actresses learned nothing from last year’s Anne Hathaway “nipple-gate”. Ladies, wear a bra or at least cover those up.

    Golden Globes 2014

Real Life Philomena Lee and Niki Lauda
It was heartwarming to see both the real life Philomena Lee (from the film Philomena) and Formula One car driver Niki Lauda (from the film Rush) appear on stage to present. Too bad they forgot about Canadian Ambassador Ken Taylor last year – but then again, his role in Argo was deemed to be a minor one, which was also too bad.

    First Win by Netflix
Robin Wright took home the Globe for Best Actress, TV Drama for the Netflix produced series House of Cards. The win marks the first time in history that a TV internet series hits the big time. Other than the side boob slip, this win has to have traditional network executive nervous as to what the future holds. Congrats Netflix.

  • Whistler Cornucopia Wine and Food Festival 2013

It’s one of Whistler’s biggest events of the year – and this year it just got bigger. Whistler’s 17th Annual Cornucopia food and wine festival is on now and there’s lot of new stuff happening. Usually held for only one weekend, this year the festival has expanded to a full 11 days and two weekends. Sponsored by North Shore based BlueShore Financial, the event is known for its famous winemakers’ dinners, tasting seminars and wild after parties. This year’s version however has a mellower tone. Putting the focus back on the wine, attendees and guests can walk from event to event with ease and experience all that Whistler has to offer before the big ski season hits. The festival continues all this weekend.

Also, a big nod to Glacier Media executives who were among the VIPs and who are now also the new owners/publishers of our own Outlook newspaper. Congrats to everyone involved!

  • Singer Chantal Kreviazuk Headlines Baldy Hughes Gala

It’s called a “Therapeutic Community” and it works. Inspired and modelled on the San Patrignano community in Italy, the Baldy Hughes centre is a highly-effective, year-long addiction treatment facility located outside Prince George. It was brought to life by former West Vancouver businessman and founding member Kevin England and a team of philanthropic citizens who are part of the BC New Hope Recovery Society. Their mandate, treat addiction while emphasizing a return to positive citizenship. “Being part of something greater than themselves and being held accountable – often for the first time in their lives – is a transformational experience for these men, many who were thought to be beyond hope” says England. Last month, a Gratitude Celebration Gala was held at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver featuring Juno-award winning singer Chantal Kreviazuk. With passion and grace, Kreviazuk helped the society raise money for the ongoing support of this facility which is offered free of charge to qualifying men in need of support. • Glee Star Cory Monteith Found Dead in Vancouver

Sad news tonight as Vancouver Police confirm the death of Glee actor Cory Monteith.

The 31 year-old Canadian born star was staying at the Fairmont Pacific Rim, one of Vancouver’s newest and most popular hotels, when he failed to check out at his designated time Saturday. He had checked into the hotel on July 6th and police confirm that card key / fob entries to his room confirm he most probably returned to the room alone.

Hotel staff checked the room and called police upon finding the body.

At the news conference, police and coroner confirm that when they found the body at noon, he had been dead for several hours. Police also confirm that the cause of death was not apparent but that there are no indications of foul play. They declined to answer questions about any other items or evidence found in the room.

The entire incident comes on the heels of a false report of Monteith’s death which was apparently reported on Facebook and Twitter Friday July 12, 2013 and later confirmed as a hoax. The site MediaMass has since changed and manipulated their post (and the dates) which previously read “Monteith’s agents have confirmed he is alive and well”.

There are no further police updates expected until Sunday / Monday at the earliest.

It’s where the stylish go to see and be seen. The annual Brian Jessel Cabriolet Gala is one of this city’s most prominent fundraisers and it’s well known for high fashion, fast cars, beautiful people and celebrity entertainment. As always, many North Shore faces were among the crowd on this 8th anniversary contributing as both sponsors and supporters. Burlesque dancers and go-go girls helped warm up the room before the live auction. Fabulous food, supplied by many of Vancouver’s leading restaurants, was served during the reception which also included a silent auction. Then it was time to clear the stage for up-and-coming singer Rosette who was followed by headlining musician Colin James. All funds raised go to support the Canadian Cancer Society.

  • Leo Awards 2013 Vancouver Film – Part II

For 15 years now, the Leo Awards have helped shine the spotlight on hundreds of talented people working in BC film and television. And yet, after all these years, it happily continues to mix glamour and humility into a perfect combination that seems to get only better with age.

The actual Leo Awards gala event, held this past Saturday at Vancouver’s Westin Bayshore Hotel, is an annual “Oscar” style evening complete with red carpet, champagne reception, live music, gourmet dinner and, of course, the awards show itself.

The big night has always been a favourite of mine. And after covering the “Leos” for about 13 years now (see archive here), this veteran can truly say that this year’s anniversary show was one of the best.

Maybe it was because of all the beautiful young starlets – each one dressed to cover model perfection as they stepped onto their first real red carpet. Maybe it was the fabulous live orchestra led by the amazing Hal Beckett. Or maybe it was all the handsome leading men, like Ryan Robbins, Ben Ratner and Ian Tracey – each a seasoned professional with big bankability here in BC and beyond.

All of these elements were there. But maybe the biggest reason for success was the sense of accomplishment and sincerity that show producers Walter Daroshin and Sonny Wong again managed to weave into a magical evening where, for one night only, it was okay for this tight-knit local industry to stand up and do a little well-earned Hollywood style chest thumping.

The night began with a bang as actress Beverley Elliott, who plays the role of “Granny” in ABC TV’s Once Upon a Time series,  got on stage to sing a rabble-rousing version of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep”. Entitled “Filming in BC”, the song was a hilarious reference to many of the ins and outs of working in the industry. It also poked fun at directors, producers and BC Film’s recent campaign for government tax cuts – all of which garnered big laughs and cheers from the audience.

Next up – the comedic husband and wife duo of Brent Butt and Nancy Robertson. Needing little introduction, the pair launched into a routine of perfectly timed jabs and jokes – and some not so perfectly planned improvised moments that turned out to be more hilarious than the planned script. No one was safe as they took pot shots at everything from the technical difficulties to the long-winded awards presentation itself.

Other highlights this evening included a special 40th anniversary tribute by actor Jackson Davies to the legendary The Beachcombers series – a series which not only put the west coast of Canada on the map, but also triggered the birth of Hollywood North. Also this night, the many achievements of producer/director David Nutter were honoured with the Stephen J. Cannell award for all of  great work in BC – much of which dates back to the days of Johnny Depp in 21 Jump Street.

Still, the night belonged to the nominees and Leo Award honourees who will hopefully look back on it all as a night to remember. And whether their careers take them all the way to the Academy Awards, or just to the next cattle call, I know they will all never forget that it all started right here in little ol’ British Columbia.

01 – Hubba hubba! Looking just as tall and handsome in real life, Property Brothers stars Drew Scott, left, and Jonathan Scott, right, are Leo presenters this night. Playing man in the middle, big brother JD comes along to keep them out of trouble.

03 – Always in character, actor Michael Eklund shares a red carpet moment with Leo Awards president Walter Daroshin. Eklund would later take home the award for his work in Errors of the Human Body – a project he said was “life changing” in many ways.

04 – The cast members and Leo nominees of Becoming Redwood walk the red carpet in style. From left: director  Jesse James Miller, actor Ryan Grantham and actress Jennifer Copping. Both Miller and Copping would take home Leos this night for their work in The Good Son – The Life of Ray ‘Boom Boom’ Mancini and for Becoming Redwood respectively.

05 – He’s a charming lead man in every way. Actor Michael Shanks, of Stargate and Smallville fame, takes home a Leo for his work in Saving Hope.

06 – She’s always the epitome of elegance on every red carpet. This year, actress Amanda Tapping walks the walk in a sleek and stylish black pantsuit. Win!

07 – Taya Clyne is adorable in every way, yet carries herself with the seasoned confidence of a true pro. Taking home the Leo for “Best Female Performance in a Short Drama”, she also wins my vote for best dressed in her fabulous fuchsia gown.

08 – You know you’re in for a good time with comedians Brent Butt and Nancy Robertson as hosts. Chatting with Leo Awards president Walter Daroshin prior to the show, the trio poses for media photos together on the red carpet.

  • BC Film and Television Leo Awards 2013

I’ve always said it’s like a little bit of the Academy Awards right here in BC – but the truth is that the Leo Awards are much much more. And when you consider all the talented people that work in BC film and television, there really is a lot to celebrate. The 15th anniversary gala of the Leo Awards was held last weekend as the Westin Bayshore rolled out the red carpet and put on the ritz to welcome a record number of deserving nominees. The local stars, directors, producers, voice actors and stuntmen that have helped make Hollywood North a reality were all winners. Comedians Brent Butt and wife Nancy Robertson were spectacular as hosts and live music by Hal Beckett and The Vancouver Film Orchestra really added big glamour to make this one of the best years ever!

Held at the prestigious Vancouver Club, Novus Nights was an evening of glitz and glamour. • Quinn Lemley New York’s Burlesque Beauty

Burlesque performer Quinn Lemley knows that sometimes you “gotta get a gimmick”. But look beyond the tricks and kicks and you’ll find that her stage salute to the classics is full of both substance, and show.

Leading lady Lemley is bringing her Burlesque to Broadway stage extravaganza to Vancouver’s River Rock Theatre this coming weekend (April 6). Her ensemble includes two talented sidekicks (dancers Amanda Brantley and Sarah Brophy) and a 10-piece big band taken directly from the Great White Way.

Armed with a wardrobe of feathers and fans, and a whole slew of sequins and sparkle, the passionate red-head promises an event that feels more like a party than anything else.

In an recent interview from New York city, Lemley says that while she has visited BC before, she is very much looking forward to her first visit to Vancouver.

“I want everyone to be titilated and teased and really pleased,” she says with a giggle over the phone.

Lemley however is also quick to point out that underneath all the glamour, the show is a special tribute to the ladies of the burlesque era and the amazing legacy they left behind.

Inspired by names like Mae West, Rita Hayworth and more, Lemley affectionately describes her romance with the stage and the songs she so dearly loves to perform.

“I don’t know what it is,” she says. “But putting on a boa you just feel so fun and sexy.”

Written and produced in part by Lemley herself, she says she couldn’t wait to write a story that tells the tale of not only her idols, but also herself.

Lemley also adds that while it was important to keep the production sultry and sexy, it is by no means vulgar or inappropriate in any way.

“I think there’s something about manners and glamour and decency and watching how we speak,” she states. “It’s all the old jokes with double entendres and it’s never sleazy – it’s smart. I think always being classy is best.”

Saying that they really blow the roof off the house with one hit after another, Lemley looks forward to belting out the biggies. She also looks forward to meeting her audience after the show.

“The people in BC are amazing,” she says. “We always have women coming out in groups dressed-up and and it’s a great date night.”

Talking to her, it’s easy to tell that this burlesque beauty has a genuine fondness for the women she portrays on stage. And while most folks can’t wait to see her in character, it’s clear that her strength of character is what makes her a star.

  • On the Scene with John Green – Bar Consultant to the Stars

Whether he’s shaking hands with the Rolling Stones, or shaking a martini for actress Sharon Stone, celebrity club owner and international bar expert John Green has become the latest “One to Watch” here in Vancouver.

    rolling-stones-ronnie-wood-charlie-watts-john-green
John Green with Rolling Stones Ronnie Wood & Charlie Watts

Armed with an impressive resume and a collection of celebrity photos that would make a paparazzi drool, Green has definitely earned his stripes. His reputation as a top level bar consultant is well-deserved given that he started as one of the original Tom Cruise hippy-hippy-cocktail shakers of his day.

Now, with a world of experience behind him, he’s setting his sights even higher as he concocts his next move and possibly a jump to television.

And with a background that includes everything from appearances on the London stage (with actress Emma Thompson), to  his days as a semi-pro golfer, one can only wonder what Green is capable of next.

Speaking from his West Vancouver home, Green’s eyes instantly light up with mischief as he talks about his many past experiences in London, California and Hong Kong. Schmoozing with the likes of Liza Minnelli and Matthew McConaughy was the norm and the Dom Perignon champagne flowed like water.

    Matthew mcconaughey
John Green entertains movie star Matthew McConaughey here in Vancouver

“It was fascinating in that they’re just people,” he says as he ponders all his celebrity encounters. “It was very cool because everyone just likes to hang around with the stars – and it was also good for business.”

His devilish grin continues to gives him away as we pour over more photos of Green tipping tequila down the throat of billionaire Richard Branson at an exclusive private soiree.  Yet another photo shows Green at a private after-party posing nonchalantly with two of “the boys” – namely Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood from the Rolling Stones.

Virgin billionaire Richard Branson enjoys a little tequila time with bar star John Green
Virgin billionaire Richard Branson enjoys a little tequila time with bar star John Green

The life he has lived would make for a great movie – but it’s the stories he can’t tell publicly that would easily fill a book.

But whether it’s consulting at the Cumberland Hotel, or working with John Jarvis, chief executive officer of Hilton Hotels worldwide, Green is more than the sum of his bar flair.

As founder of Bar Biz UK, a hospitality training consultant group, Green and his partners helped open some of the most prestigious places on the planet. The China Jump Hong Kong, The Jump Kuala Lumpur and The Wall $t Supper Club in Malaysia are just a few of the establishments that he co-owned and operated. Hired to do work all over Britain, he was even contracted by Smirnoff Vodka U.K. to develop new cutting edge bar concepts never seen before. Green and his team also trained staff in Ireland, France and Australia with bartender tours in Greece and more.

Meryl Streep, Sharon Stone, Gil Bellows, Christian Slater, Saul Rubinek
Meryl Streep, Sharon Stone, Gil Bellows, Christian Slater, Saul Rubinek

Once billed as “Europe’s Best Bartender” by United Distillers, Green was even featured in Cosmopolitan’s U.K. magazine as “one of the most interesting people to meet in London” back in the early 90s.

So what does this leading international bar consultant think of Vancouver?

Green has some insight here too, stating that liquor law changes need to happen – and soon.

“I welcome changes to the existing liquor laws,” he says. “I would love to start up a joint or two in Vancouver but the style of operations that I do would be stifled by the licensing laws currently here in British Columbia.”

Needless to say, while Vancouver muddles its way through some new liquor legalese, look for this effervescent Englishman to start shaking things up just a little more than usual.
