Go Canada Go Rally for London 2012 Olympics
Olympic fever has returned! But this time, instead of cheering our athletes on from our own backyard, we’ll have to shout a little louder to make ourselves heard all the way across the Atlantic. That was the sentiment last week as West Vancouver’s Park Royal Shopping Centre held a special “Go Canada Go” pep rally and parade in celebration of the start of the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Drummers assembled in south side village to start the march which then proceeded across to the north mall at which time the public was treated to an Olympic summer fashion show and treats all in the name of cheering for the home team. And while we may have traded in our red mittens for red sunglasses, it’s easy to remember just how proud we feel every time we see that red maple leaf. Vancouver’s The Fair at the PNE is a Big Hit with North Shore Locals
The Fair at the PNE has been a West Coast tradition for over 101 years now. And while the Labour Day long weekend may mark the start of school, it just wouldn’t feel right to welcome September without a little nod to the North Shore folks who helped make things come alive at the best rock ‘n roller coaster, farm’n fun attraction that has been a deep fried family favourite for over a century. Yee haw!

Vancouver Twestival 2011 at Vancouver Lookout and Waldorf School Festival of the Arts Show

If Twitter is the new way of sharing information, then a “Twestival” may be the new way of raising money. Started in London in 2008, this nouveau idea is now much more than a fad. With over 200 cities participating, it has become an annual social night out event that proves you really can think globally and act locally. So big congratulations go out to Vancouver’s elite tweeters who helped raise over $8,000 at last week’s YVR Twestival on behalf of local charity Beauty Night Society – an organization that helps give self-esteem to women living in poverty. It’s a natural wonderland throughout the year, but at Christmas, this place really shines. Capilano Suspension Bridge, known worldwide for its famous heights, is all decked out for the season. The Canyon Lights display, which has over 250,000 lights throughout, is a great place for families. Running until Jan 2, an evening here can also include a visit with glass blower Malcolm McFadyen, live music from the “Holiday Band”, hot chocolate, gingerbread and more. Funds collected go to support the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund.
It’s a milestone year in West Vancouver as the Harmony Arts Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary. Held in various locations, including John Lawson Park, Ambleside Landing, The Ferry Building Gallery and more, the festival is famous for its art displays, live concerts, lectures and outdoor movies. This year, an outdoor wine garden adds some spice to the mix as does a fashion show by local boutique Leslie Jane. Get out and celebrate this weekend too with an evening concert or a stroll through the craft fair. On until Aug 8.
The 19th Annual Harmony Arts Festival is always a favourite among locals, but this year, thanks to some spectacular record breaking temperatures, the crowds have gotten bigger and bigger. Art displays, children’s activities, youth rock, weekend craft fairs, evening outdoor movies and live concerts by the sea are all part of the festival that just wrapped up this past weekend with a spectacular outdoor show by Nearly Neil’s own Bobby Bruce.
