  • Olympic Parties – The Big Ending

All the medals have been given out and the athletes have gone home, but the memories will live on forever. • Olympic Ice Dancing Fashions and Faux Pas

There’s no throws, triple flips, double axels or, for that matter, falling down on your butt – but, when it comes to Olympic ice dancing there is still plenty of drama, especially in the fashion department.

    – –

    WEIRDEST OUTFITS EVER

    russians.jpg

Russian bronze medal winners Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin may have skated to a third place win on the podium, but their outfits were so distracting that it was hard to focus on their dance instead of their duds. Based on the film “The Double Life of Veronique”, these costumes are clearly a case of schizophrenic kleenex meets Jack the Ripper. And really Oksana, could there be a worse place to put a picture of a face? From far away it just looks obscene.

    – –

    WORST DRESSED

    russian_icedance.jpg

Yes, they’ve done it again folks. Russia’s Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin based their original dance program on an Australian aboriginal theme, much to the dismay of the aboriginals. Maxim’s outfit was much more “tanned” in colour before being ordered to “tone it down” for Olympic reasons. My advice – get a new costume designer, quickly – your skating is too good for these kind of gimmicks.

    – –

    MOST FUN WITHOUT SEQUINS

    kerrsjpg-536448e7c3ad6d10_large.jpg

Howdy partner! British figure skating team Sinead and John Kerr went for a country and western-style routine that actually had some sparkle without having the sparkle, if you know what I mean. Still, if you think that Brits are all tea and crumpets, these outfits will surely change your mind. And yes, I think that’s an actual belly button you see and not that weird flesh-coloured figure skating fabric.

    – –

    MOST FLAMBOYANT

    52346638.jpg

She was as flashy as her costume and he was equally commanding in his black flame suit. Russia’s Jana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitski didn’t skate a perfect program but their outfits helped them steal the show. Part bird, part circus performer, Jana literally flew around his head, twisting and twirling as much as the purple, yellow and red swirls of chiffon flying out behind her. Wonder if I could borrow that for the next red carpet?

    – –

    BEST THEMED COSTUME

    460-SPORTSOLY-FIG-DANCE11CNW.embedded.prod_affiliate.156.jpg

You just have to love Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White. These silver medallists are a class act all the way from their performances on the ice, to their off ice friendship with Canadians Moir and Virtue, to their fabulous themed costumes. Borrowing on themes of a sari for their original dance, Meryl’s outfit was stunning in every way and didn’t look contrived in any way. Stunning and exciting!

    – –

    BEST OVERALL

    n022223A.jpg

Yes, all of Canada is in love with them now and forever, and I admit that here I am biased. But how can you not love Canada’s gold medal winners Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir in this Spanish inspired black, red and white combo. Elegant, simple yet fiery enough to boost their original dance into first place. I half expected Catherine Zeta-Jones and Antonio Banderas as Zorro to appear. One last thought Tessa, please stay a brunette. It completes you!

  • Amy Winehouse – Breasts, Drugs and a Rockin’ Cold

Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab” days may not be over yet.

As reported by Splash News, the British based, Grammy award winning singer was temporarily hospitalized last Sunday night after taking an over-the-counter cold medication – a medication which apparently didn’t mix well with prescription drugs she was already taking for her drug and alcohol recovery program.

The reaction between the cold meds and recovery medication sent the singer back to The London Clinic – a place she knows well having just receive a breast enhancement operation there recently.

The UK Mirror reported. “A doctor came to the house and advised her to go to the hospital to make sure she was all right. She was due to stay the night.”

One can only hope that now, since she has found her way to the doctor to do her boobs, can she can find a dentist to fix those God awful teeth? Watch out for the novocaine Amy, and please stay off that laughing gas.

Rehab obviously hasn’t been easy and the star appears to be having problems focusing. Her website reports no new albums on the horizon and seems to have morphed into a alias feeder site for Dionne Bromfield, Amy’s goddaughter.

Winehouse, who signed Bromfield to her record label earlier this year, has been seen chumming around town with the junior crooner. The two sang a duet of sorts and appeared on BBC1 TV’s “Strictly Come Dancing” (which is the original “Dancing With the Stars” show here in North America) in October of this year.

Bromfield’s recent release includes a cover of the Shirelles song “Mama Said [there’d be days like this]” which makes me wonder who she’s been taking advice from. Ironically, let’s hope it’s not godmother Amy Winehouse.

  • North Shore Outlook 10 Year Anniversary

10-year_groupYou know how they say time flies when you’re having fun? Well, trust me when I say that it’s true. The last decade has flown by at the speed of light and in looking back, I realize just how wonderful, yet fleeting, life can be. In the last seven years that I have had the privilege of writing for The Outlook, I estimate that I have taken 11,653 photos of close to 34,959 faces at more than 3,640 local events. To this day, I never forget a smile (even though I sometimes forget the name – wink). So here’s to you – the people of my community, my neighbours and my new found friends. It is an honour to be here to share in all your special memories. I thank you all for your heart-warming smiles and look forward to ten years more – at least.

10 – There were tears, cheers and beers as the staff of the old Park Royal Hotel bid a bittersweet goodbye to their old digs in September 2004 to make way for a new development. Back in 1995, a shocking headline about child labour spurred then 12 year-old Craig Kielburger into starting the Free The Children foundation. Today, along with brother Marc, these young men have literally managed to inspire a nation of youth to take action. At the first inaugural We Vancouver event, the Kielburger brothers were joined by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and other international celebrities to talk to more than 16,000 Vancouver students between the ages of 12-17 about their “Ten by Ten” campaign and the call for “compassion, courage and community”. Country music, Bhangra drums plus celebrity chefs and wine helped wrap up the last week of Summer 2009. First up, the Canadian Country Music Awards (CCMA) brought big name singers to the city with a festival that included live concerts, fan parties and a fabulous live awards show that was broadcast across Canada. • Sheryl Crow, Neil Young, Sarah McLachlan Summer Sessions

Words almost can’t describe it. At first, it was sheer excitement at the site of the colourful Moroccan themed private tent suites. Then, it was pride as opening acts like the Sarah McLachlan Foundation Choir took to the stage and cruise ships sailed past Ambleside beach. Finally, as night falls on a near perfect day, it was magic as Sheryl Crow, Neil Young and Sarah McLachlan, three of the biggest names in music, performed to a sold-out crowd the likes of which we have never seen here in West Vancouver. It was a once in a lifetime VIP experience that I hope we get to do all over again next year, and next, and next. Congrats to everyone involved.

01 & 02 – Glowbal Catering executive chef Jeremy Atkins and sushi chef Yoshi prepare food fit for concert royalty as they serve up mango california rolls, ahi tuna, lamb chops and lobster grilled cheese (my fave) to those in the VIP suites.

03 – The Shore 104 Radio program director Patrick Zulinov, left, parties like a rock star with Keg Restaurant empire owner, and now part-time radio owner, David Aisenstat in his VIP suite.

04 – It’s been a long time since Dr. Robert Lee tapped me on the head for graduation as UBC Chancellor back in 1995. This night, he and wife Lily bask in the sun in his VIP suite next to Sarah McLachlan’s dad and family to enjoy the show.

05 – He’s a member of CBC’s the Dragon’s Den, but in real life Brett Wilson is a real sweetheart who is a big fan and supporter of the Sarah McLachlan Foundation.

06 – West Vancouver’s Graham and Angela Lee deserve a lot of the credit for making this concert happen. It was Graham’s original idea that got the ball rolling – thank you thank you thank you.

12 – Surrounded by a halo of guitars, music legend Neil Young plays a mellower, unplugged set in front of 9,000 fans who just couldn’t get enough.

13 & 14 – Sarah McLachlan and Sheryl Crow team up for duets on Crow’s “Strong Enough” and McLachlan’s “Angel”, giving everyone goosebumps. HItting high notes with no effort at all, and with no signs of the laryngitis she had been battling earlier in the week, McLachlan ended the show by asking “So if we do this again would you all come back?” You bet!

  • Sheryl Crow, Neil Young and Sarah McLachlan Concert Update

For a West Vancouver local like me, it just doesn’t get any better. Imagine Sarah McLachlan, Neil Young and Sheryl Crow playing in my very own little community of West Vancouver (www.westvancouver.com).

For those lucky ticket holders who are on their way to West Vancouver’s Ambleside Park on Saturday May 12, here’s a rundown of need-to-know items including directions, start times, transit info and banned items.

For those without tickets – forget it, they’re gone. The best you’re gonna get (beyond a scalper) is a view of a big fence, however I’m betting that you’re going to be able to hear it pretty good if you have a friend with a nearby apartment balcony. Boaters, you too are out of luck because the harbour patrol will be out shooing you away.

For residents – buckle in. The roads around the park are basically closed (even though they claim the park is still open to the public), and the surrounding area, including Park Royal Mall is being used for parking. Good luck getting anywhere. Also, I hope you like it noisy because the gates open at noon and the final act doesn’t wrap up until 11pm.

    Enjoy the show.

  • Justin Timberlake and Givenchy Launch

West Vancouver’s The Bay was bringing sexy back this past weekend as they launched the new Justin Timberlake and Givenchy men’s perfume line called Play. Cast as the face of Givenchy last year, Timberlake’s youthful image literally “plays” off the iPod movement and features the sexy star lounging with his music and his music player shaped cologne bottle. It’s a groove that hits well with customers as curious shoppers stopped by to dance to the live DJ and sample with staff as a Justin Timberlake look-a-like played the part and posed with his models.

01 – Givenchy Parfums rep Denise van Straaten, left, joins The Bay cosmetics manager Marissa Marcelino to celebrate the launch of the new Justin Timberlake scent.

02 – Models Julie Seymour, left, and Teresa Agnew cuddle up to Justin Timberlake look-a-like Holden Vouriot as they pose with customers as part of the promotion.

03 – DJ Q-Pid usually spins his tunes in hot clubs downtown. This afternoon he and model Nikara Brasnett shake things up at The Bay’s cosmetics counter celebration.

04 – The Bay staffers flash a surprise smile as they get caught by celebrity paparazzi photographer Max Zessel on film.

05 – Model Jon Yoshida, left, helps Troy B. promote the new hip line of Givenchy products that bear Timberlake’s name and image.

06 – Justin Timberlake is no stranger to charity events. Seen here with Elton John at his White Tie and Tiara benefit last month, the music stars helped raise money for AIDS.
