Khakis and cocktail dresses were on my marching orders last week as one of the most spectacular gala evenings ever to hit Vancouver was held in honour of the True Patriot Love Foundation. “Operation Western Front” was co-chaired by businessmen Warren M. Spitz and W. Brett Wilson (of CBC’s Dragons’ Den fame). Together they turned the Vancouver Convention Centre into a quasi military style forward operation base complete with camo, ammo and Hollywood glam-o. During the elegant reception, guests were more than moved by artist Dave Sopha’s “Portraits of Honour” (www.portraitsofhonour.ca) – a massive tribute to the fallen in Afghanistan. Then, a real live patrolling helicopter buzzed the ballroom outside the windows ordering everyone to take their military dinner tray to the five-star buffet line for “chow time”. A touching tribute by singer John McDermott and a lively auction featuring KISS rock star Gene Simmons helped round out a special evening that raised over $1.5 million for military families and veterans in need. Congrats to all involved.
01 – Gala host W. Brett Wilson poses with two of Vancouver’s most philanthropic ladies, namely Christie King, left, and West Vancouverite / La Stella Winery owner Saeedeh Salem.
02 – Gala co-chair Warren Spitz, founder of UCS Forest Group, cuddles up to PR gal extraordinaire Maureen O’Brien as dinner begins.
03 – West Vancouver Olympian Charmaine Crooks, left, joins TV Travel Guy host Jim Gordon and CTV early news anchor Coleen Christie during the reception.
04 – North Vancouver’s 6 Engineer Squadron members Major Ward Trythall, left, and Robert Alliston lend their support along with North Vancouver City Mayor Darrell Mussatto.
05 – Scottish-Canadian tenor John McDermott’s touching rendition of “Bringing Buddy Home” is one of the most poignant moments of the night. Find his latest album on iTunes and help raise funds for McDermott House Canada in support of veterans’ care.
06 – Vancouver Olympic (VANOC) CEO John Furlong, seen here with Defence Minister Peter MacKay, is presented with the Canadian Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service by General Walter Natynczyk. This is the highest honour that can ever be bestowed on a civilian.
07 – He loves to rock ‘n roll and party every day. KISS lead man and “Family Jewels” reality TV star Gene Simmons and life partner / Playboy playmate Shannon Tweed come out to support their friend Brett Wilson and all of the Canadian military families through the True Patriot Love foundation (TruePatriotLove.com).

The Annual Forum for Women Entrepreneurs (FWE) Gala was held last week in honour of British Columbia’s female winery owners and experts. There was also a live taping of “The Tasting Room” with host Terry David Mulligan during the reception and a lavish silent auction full of fabulous libations. Also last week, it was time for the second annual Face of Tomorrow Gala. It was a special start to the New Year at the River Rock Casino show theatre as retro rockers Foreigner took to the stage with a group of very special West Vancouver kids. Collingwood School music students were granted a special audience with the “Hot Blooded” chart toppers who, judging from the crowd, are still capable of raising the roof with old and new songs from their special CD release. Helping to raise money for East Vancouver school music programs, the Collingwood kids helped sell the CDs, and then, joined Foreigner live on stage to provide the famous choral background to their famous “I Wanna Know What Love Is” top ten hit. It was a standing ovation for all involved. Also, last week, it was time to toast the start of a new radio season with the AM650 / Virgin Radio gang. Every Tuesday morning at 8:50a I get to spend some time with these great people chatting live on the air about North Shore events, so here’s a little cheers to you and all you do.

Louis Vuitton – they’re the envy of every purse toting gal in the world and a name automatically associated with class, luxury and style. So when my gilded gold Louis Vuitton invitation arrived, I expected only the best, and boy did they deliver. In my 12 years as a society columnist, I have never seen a party like this. The who’s who of Vancouver and the North Shore were decked out in style as they arrived to a champagne reception at the swank new Fairmont Vancouver Hotel location. Even Hollywood celebs and models dropped by to chat with executives who had flown in directly from Paris for the affair. Then, in groups of four, we were shuttled away swiftly in mysterious black SUV’s to a secret train station stop where porters helped us board an old fashion steam train. More champagne, and a five minute ride later, we were again surprised to find ourselves inside an old fashion train station decorated to the hilt and complete with DJ, live music, food and fun. It was definitely a night to remember. Congrats to all involved.

01 – What a thrill to get to meet Louis Vuitton Executive Vice President Phillippe Schaus, left, all the way from Paris with Louis Vuitton supermodel Gabriel Aubry (ex-boyfriend to Halle Berry and Kim Kardashian) and Geoffroy van Raemdonck, acting President of Louis Vuitton North American.

04 – West Vancouver’s stunning Janelle Washington attended the event with friends.
05 – Socialites and UBC sorority sisters Christie King, left, and Darcia Bower share some conversation in the lobby.
06 – Looking like a model herself, PR maven Shannon Heth shows us how to pour from the Moet magnum bottle.

In October 1997, I spent the afternoon on the set of Leslie Nielsen’s movie “Wrongfully Accused” and it was a blast. He was shooting his latest movie in West Vancouver. Back then I was a reporter for the North Shore News and spent the day in Lighthouse Park watching all the action.
The article, which has been reprinted below, was that week’s front page cover story. It was written during a time when X-Files actor David Duchovny was said to be so depressed about Vancouver’s rainy weather that he was leaving the city and the show for sunnier destinations.

Nielsen is, without a doubt, one of the nicest people in show business. At 71, he was still doing some of his own stunts and clowning around even when the cameras stopped rolling. Director Pat Proft (see above) is also full of fun and I couldn’t stop laughing.
The crew had been the target of so many of Nielsen’s practical jokes during the course of filming that on this day, they decided to get their own back. They had ordered over 100 hand-held whoopie noise makers and every time you turned around, someone let one rip. I wish all movie set were like this one.
I have also met Nielsen several times since then and every one of them was memorable. Back in 2005 we dined together at the Vancouver Police Odd Squad Gala for which he was the host for the evening. Conversation with him was never boring as he is both intelligent and charming in every way.
Nielsen death was confirmed today by family living in Richmond, BC. He is reported to have died from complications due to pneumonia in a Florida hospital. – By Catherine Barr
Eat your heart out David Duchovny. The last laugh belongs to Canada’s own native son whose star continues to shine brighter than ever.
“I love this city”, says actor Leslie Nielsen. “This is one of ‘the’ beautiful cities in North America.”
The Canadian born actor / comedian was filming his latest movie this past week in West Vancouver’s Lighthouse Park.
Nielsen took time out from his busy shooting schedule to talk personally with the News.
“Wrongfully Accused” is a spoof based on the popular movie “The Fugitive”. Nielsen stars as escaped prisoner Ryan Harrison who has been ‘wrongfully accused’ of a crime he did not commit.
“It going to be a very good film”, says Nielsen. “It’s going to be filled with a lot of laughs and we’re having nothing but fun.”
The sexy senior, now 72 years old, still manages to command attention from some of Hollywood’s most glamorous ladies. Kelly LeBrock and newcomer Melinda McGraw star opposite Nielsen and managed to get him into, and out of, a lot of on-screen trouble. Richard Crenna and Michael York also co-star.
Nielsen, originally born in Regina, was raised in the Northwest Territories. He now calls Los Angeles home. He says, “L.A. is a strange city. It deals in isolation. And when you come from the north, isolation is nothing.”
Even at his age, Nielsen still performs some of his own stunts and gags. After the interview, director Pat Proft put him to work.
“He’s on the run here today as we’re having him hit with some frying pans that are hanging in the way as he runs through the forest”, says Proft as he sets-up for a take.
“Hitting his head, falling down, this is going to be Leslie Nielsen at his best”, he says.
The veteran actor managed the scene in less than 6 takes and never once looked like he was running out of breath.
Director / Producer Pat Proft was thrilled. Proft, who also wrote the script, has helped create many of Hollywood’s major comedy hits including the “Police Academy” and “Naked Gun” movie series.
“I’ve lumped together every Harrison Ford movie I could think about plus a bunch of other movies” he says.
Proft, also an experienced producer, says Vancouver is a great place to film a movie.
“I really like being here and I like the locations we’ve found. Right now everything seems to be working and I’m very pleased with it. And Canada let me hit a bus with a train — now where else would that happen?”
Executive Producer Robert (Bob) Rosen agrees.
“It’s been great, for two reasons. One is that I rented a house in West Vancouver and I did (another film) as well as this picture, so I’ve been here forever. I’m part of the community now — I’m ready to vote.”
Rosen has produced over fifty films including hits like “Little Big Man” which starred Dustin Hoffman and Vancouver’s own Chief Dan George.
He had some extra advice for others who don’t appreciate Vancouver’s changeable weather.
“The weather has been cooperating like crazy with us. We had to manufacture our own rain. Will you pass that along to David (Duchovny)?”, asked Rosen.
Nielsen, Proft and Rosen undoubtedly make a great team. They all recently finished filming Disney’s “Mr. Magoo”, right here in Vancouver.
Nielsen remains impressed with the region, especially West Vancouver. “This Vancouver is something else. It’s just beautiful. You have forests here right in the city. And then there’s the people, my fellow Canadians.”
While filming a comedy can be a lot of hard work, Nielsen’s good nature and natural humor have been infectious among the crew.
Nielsen is well-known for his practical jokes. His favourite gag is rumored to be the whoopie cushion — a prank he pulls with some . . . regularity.
But on this occasion, the crew of “Wrongfully Accused” is well prepared to fight back. Armed with over 140 hand-held noise makers, the group forces back giggles as they launch random ‘whoopie’ attacks on any unsuspecting passerby. Even as director Proft calls for a wrap, the star himself becomes a target.
Leslie Nielsen fans will not have to wait long to see him in action. “Mr. Magoo” is scheduled for release and “Wrongfully Accused” will be in theaters in May 1998.

When West Vancouverite Sharon Chan-Knight and her business partner Tammy Preast, of Ask a Woman Enterprises, set out to raise money for breast cancer, they never thought they’d end up here. And while these resourceful gals are no strangers to party planning (having helped plan the West Vancouver Library’s annual croquet gala and more), they decided to shoot for the stars with a dual Prêt-a-Pour-Tea / Prêt-A-Pour-Nuit double bill. Last week, guests and VIPs were invited to the chic Bohemian lair of artist Pamela Masik to celebrate the fifth annual “Tea”, followed by an inaugural gala evening “Nuit”. Famous faces like actors Steve Bacic (Andromeda) and Erin Karpluk (Being Erica) were joined by featured speakers Brett “Dragons’ Den” Wilson and rocker/cancer survivor Bif Naked. The who’s who of the North Shore and more headed east to wine country during the last week of August to celebrate the “Wine Society” gala weekend at the fabulous La Stella winery in Osoyoos, BC. Brainchild of winery owner and hostess Saeedeh Salem, she described the weekend as a “total sensory experience” and paired each of her musically named wines with the food and experience taking place. For instance, during the “Leggiero” Chardonnay course, the Kelowna strings entertained on stage as guest supped on delicate seafood and salad. During the “Maestoso” reds, guests were big into beef and bold opera sung by David Foster’s protege group Classical Nouveaux. Joy Road Catering provided yet another fabulous 100-mile menu on the second night as guests were treated to another sparkling evening of wine and a live performance by Jarvis Church of the Philosopher Kings. Also a special thank you to the great people at the stunning Walnut Beach Resort property – it’s an absolute must see-and-stay with a private licensed beach, luxury suites and more. Cheers!

The greens were groomed and the sun was shining at North Vancouver’s stunning Seymour Golf and Country Club as the First Annual Vancity Golf & Boogie Tournament teed off for charity. Headed up by famous North Shore resident and legendary Vancouver Canucks keeper “King” Richard Brodeur, players were driving for show and putting to raise dough for the Hollyburn Family Services Society. Later, a five star dinner buffet and live auction kept guests bidding until Billy Dixon’s Soul Train Express and his Solid Gold Sisters of Soul kept the party pumping until late. Congrats to all involved.
