  • West Vancouver Seniors Centre Volunteers Reception

    fred_titcomb.jpg
I was once asked, “where is the best place to go for fun on the North Shore”? The answer was easy. “The West Van Seniors Centre”, I said without even having to think twice. There’s just something special about this place that always feels good every time you go there. Whether it’s a fancy occasion dance with live music, working out with the Fit Fellas, stopping by the woodworking shop or just dropping in for lunch, this place is always happening. Clearly, it is their people that make all the magic and never was this more true than for the fabulous group of volunteers that give their time and energy to all kinds of activities. Last week, at a special private reception, the centre paid tribute to their volunteers with an afternoon of live music, food, fun and more. Congrats to everyone and keep up the good work.

  • Athletics for Kids Boxing Gala Is a Hit at West Vancouver Hollyburn Country Club

    boxing_girls.jpg

Sometimes getting in the game is hard, especially for those living close to the poverty line. Hockey gear, soccer gear, baseball gear and registration fees, are costs that sometimes add up to a young person not being able to participate. Fortunately, there’s the good folks behind the Athletics for Kids organization (A4K). They’re out to even the score by supplying financially disadvantaged youth with access to community amateur sports programs. Last week, the 9th Annual A4K Boxing Dinner Gala helped raise funds via an elegant black-tie night out at West Vancouver’s Hollyburn Country Club. Round one was a martini reception, complete with silent auction items galore. Then it was time for a beautiful three-course dinner, a live auction, and then the main event – five rounds of Olympic rules sanctioned boxing. Congrats to all involved.

  • Barking Mad Whistler Sled Dog “Doggy Tweetup” First of its Kind in History in West Vancouver

    UPDATED Feb 6, 2011

First ever “doggy” tweetup in history held in reaction to local story about 100 slaughtered Canadian sled dogs

    “Barking Mad”

    Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011 – Noon – 2pm PST Ambleside Park, 1300 Marine

WEST VANCOUVER, BC – Canada’s wealthiest bedroom community played host on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011 to the world’s first ever massive social media “doggy” tweetup event. Organized by WestVancouver.com community blog editor and media personality Catherine Barr (catherinebarr.com), the “Barking Mad” event makes history for being the first of its kind ever on record.

Speaking on CKNW 980AM radio’s Bill Good Show last week, Barr said the event was planned in response to recent news about the inhumane and extremely violent slaughter of 100 healthy sled dogs by a local tour operator in the neighbouring resort community of Whistler, BC. Online reaction has included equally violent language and police continue to investigate numerous potential threats made towards the people named in the killings. Social media is being blamed for the threats.

“We need to channel something positive from this tragic event and show the world that this is not Canada, and it’s not the right way to use social media,” said Barr during the interview.

The event was not originally planned as a protest, but rather a social gathering or “Tweetup/Meetup”. Saying that this event is just as much about correct social media practices as it is about the violence against animals, Barr and her Twitter/Facebook followers battled cold and rain to show that social media is the new way to organize a cause in the 21st century.

Volunteers handed out “Tweet Cheat Sheets” to the over 800 attendees. On the page were directions about how to participate in the tweetup event if you didn’t have a Twitter enabled cell phone. “Find a new friend, ask them to tweet for you,” were the directions. Local professional bloggers were accompanied by sign bearers showing their Twitter names so that anyone wanting to take part could easily find a online connection.

Taking place from noon – 2pm in Ambleside Park, West Vancouver, BC (1300 Marine Drive), on the beaches adjacent to the landmark Lions Gate Bridge and the local SPCA, people brought their pampered pooches and wore their red Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic attire. The tweetup hastag was marked with #BarkingMad. Driving rain and cold weather did affect turnout, but thanks to those who also took party virutally, the event was a history making success.

A special balloon ceremony was performed by “Sammy” – a 13 yr old Jack Russell – who carried a heart shaped balloon out to the Squamish Nation Welcome Figure which marks the start of the doggy walk. This 20-foot tall native public art figure stands at the water’s edge and represents a welcoming of all to the area and a wish to respect the land, the animals and the traditions that go with it. Sammy was met by local musician Bruce Vernon performing music from his original composition “Der Abschied” (German for “The Goodbye”).

Online response has been overwhelming and early estimates predict that anywhere from 500 to 1,000 people attended. Inclement weather unfortunately diminished the over 3,000 expected attendees.

The event was covered by every major media outlet in Vancouver including Global BC TV, CTV Vancouver TV, CBC News TV, City TV Vancouver, News 1130 Radio, CKNW 980 Radio, CBC 1 Radio, Virgin 95.3 Radio, Vancouver Sun Newspaper, Vancouver Province Newspaper, North Shore Outlook Newspaper and WestVancouver.com Social Media Hub.

  • A Day on the Set with Actor Leslie Nielsen – R.I.P.

In October 1997, I spent the afternoon on the set of Leslie Nielsen’s movie “Wrongfully Accused” and it was a blast. He was shooting his latest movie in West Vancouver. Back then I was a reporter for the North Shore News and spent the day in Lighthouse Park watching all the action.

The article, which has been reprinted below, was that week’s front page cover story. It was written during a time when X-Files actor David Duchovny was said to be so depressed about Vancouver’s rainy weather that he was leaving the city and the show for sunnier destinations.

Nielsen is, without a doubt, one of the nicest people in show business. At 71, he was still doing some of his own stunts and clowning around even when the cameras stopped rolling. Director Pat Proft (see above) is also full of fun and I couldn’t stop laughing.

The crew had been the target of so many of Nielsen’s practical jokes during the course of filming that on this day, they decided to get their own back. They had ordered over 100 hand-held whoopie noise makers and every time you turned around, someone let one rip. I wish all movie set were like this one.

I have also met Nielsen several times since then and every one of them was memorable. Back in 2005 we dined together at the Vancouver Police Odd Squad Gala for which he was the host for the evening. Conversation with him was never boring as he is both intelligent and charming in every way.

Nielsen death was confirmed today by family living in Richmond, BC. He is reported to have died from complications due to pneumonia in a Florida hospital.

Eat your heart out David Duchovny. The last laugh belongs to Canada’s own native son whose star continues to shine brighter than ever.
“I love this city”, says actor Leslie Nielsen. “This is one of ‘the’ beautiful cities in North America.”

The Canadian born actor / comedian was filming his latest movie this past week in West Vancouver’s Lighthouse Park.

Nielsen took time out from his busy shooting schedule to talk personally with the News.

“Wrongfully Accused” is a spoof based on the popular movie “The Fugitive”. Nielsen stars as escaped prisoner Ryan Harrison who has been ‘wrongfully accused’ of a crime he did not commit.

“It going to be a very good film”, says Nielsen. “It’s going to be filled with a lot of laughs and we’re having nothing but fun.”

The sexy senior, now 72 years old, still manages to command attention from some of Hollywood’s most glamorous ladies. Kelly LeBrock and newcomer Melinda McGraw star opposite Nielsen and managed to get him into, and out of, a lot of on-screen trouble. Richard Crenna and Michael York also co-star.

Nielsen, originally born in Regina, was raised in the Northwest Territories. He now calls Los Angeles home. He says, “L.A. is a strange city. It deals in isolation. And when you come from the north, isolation is nothing.”

Even at his age, Nielsen still performs some of his own stunts and gags. After the interview, director Pat Proft put him to work.

“He’s on the run here today as we’re having him hit with some frying pans that are hanging in the way as he runs through the forest”, says Proft as he sets-up for a take.

“Hitting his head, falling down, this is going to be Leslie Nielsen at his best”, he says.

The veteran actor managed the scene in less than 6 takes and never once looked like he was running out of breath.

Director / Producer Pat Proft was thrilled. Proft, who also wrote the script, has helped create many of Hollywood’s major comedy hits including the “Police Academy” and “Naked Gun” movie series.

“I’ve lumped together every Harrison Ford movie I could think about plus a bunch of other movies” he says.

Proft, also an experienced producer, says Vancouver is a great place to film a movie.

“I really like being here and I like the locations we’ve found. Right now everything seems to be working and I’m very pleased with it. And Canada let me hit a bus with a train — now where else would that happen?”

Executive Producer Robert (Bob) Rosen agrees.

“It’s been great, for two reasons. One is that I rented a house in West Vancouver and I did (another film) as well as this picture, so I’ve been here forever. I’m part of the community now — I’m ready to vote.”

Rosen has produced over fifty films including hits like “Little Big Man” which starred Dustin Hoffman and Vancouver’s own Chief Dan George.

He had some extra advice for others who don’t appreciate Vancouver’s changeable weather.

“The weather has been cooperating like crazy with us. We had to manufacture our own rain. Will you pass that along to David (Duchovny)?”, asked Rosen.

Nielsen, Proft and Rosen undoubtedly make a great team. They all recently finished filming Disney’s “Mr. Magoo”, right here in Vancouver.

Nielsen remains impressed with the region, especially West Vancouver. “This Vancouver is something else. It’s just beautiful. You have forests here right in the city. And then there’s the people, my fellow Canadians.”

While filming a comedy can be a lot of hard work, Nielsen’s good nature and natural humor have been infectious among the crew.

Nielsen is well-known for his practical jokes. His favourite gag is rumored to be the whoopie cushion — a prank he pulls with some . . . regularity.

But on this occasion, the crew of “Wrongfully Accused” is well prepared to fight back. Armed with over 140 hand-held noise makers, the group forces back giggles as they launch random ‘whoopie’ attacks on any unsuspecting passerby. Even as director Proft calls for a wrap, the star himself becomes a target.

Leslie Nielsen fans will not have to wait long to see him in action. “Mr. Magoo” is scheduled for release and “Wrongfully Accused” will be in theaters in May 1998.

  • Sheryl Crow, Neil Young and Sarah McLachlan Concert Update

For a West Vancouver local like me, it just doesn’t get any better. Imagine Sarah McLachlan, Neil Young and Sheryl Crow playing in my very own little community of West Vancouver (www.westvancouver.com).

For those lucky ticket holders who are on their way to West Vancouver’s Ambleside Park on Saturday May 12, here’s a rundown of need-to-know items including directions, start times, transit info and banned items.

For those without tickets – forget it, they’re gone. The best you’re gonna get (beyond a scalper) is a view of a big fence, however I’m betting that you’re going to be able to hear it pretty good if you have a friend with a nearby apartment balcony. Boaters, you too are out of luck because the harbour patrol will be out shooing you away.

For residents – buckle in. The roads around the park are basically closed (even though they claim the park is still open to the public), and the surrounding area, including Park Royal Mall is being used for parking. Good luck getting anywhere. Also, I hope you like it noisy because the gates open at noon and the final act doesn’t wrap up until 11pm.

    Enjoy the show.

  • Justin Timberlake and Givenchy Launch

West Vancouver’s The Bay was bringing sexy back this past weekend as they launched the new Justin Timberlake and Givenchy men’s perfume line called Play. Cast as the face of Givenchy last year, Timberlake’s youthful image literally “plays” off the iPod movement and features the sexy star lounging with his music and his music player shaped cologne bottle. It’s a groove that hits well with customers as curious shoppers stopped by to dance to the live DJ and sample with staff as a Justin Timberlake look-a-like played the part and posed with his models.

01 – Givenchy Parfums rep Denise van Straaten, left, joins The Bay cosmetics manager Marissa Marcelino to celebrate the launch of the new Justin Timberlake scent.

02 – Models Julie Seymour, left, and Teresa Agnew cuddle up to Justin Timberlake look-a-like Holden Vouriot as they pose with customers as part of the promotion.

03 – DJ Q-Pid usually spins his tunes in hot clubs downtown. This afternoon he and model Nikara Brasnett shake things up at The Bay’s cosmetics counter celebration.

04 – The Bay staffers flash a surprise smile as they get caught by celebrity paparazzi photographer Max Zessel on film.

05 – Model Jon Yoshida, left, helps Troy B. promote the new hip line of Givenchy products that bear Timberlake’s name and image.

06 – Justin Timberlake is no stranger to charity events. Seen here with Elton John at his White Tie and Tiara benefit last month, the music stars helped raise money for AIDS.

  • Hot Rod Saturday in West Vancouver

Fords, Chevys, Model-Ts and more lined the streets of Park Royal Village in West Vancouver this past weekend as Hot Rod Saturday got everyone’s motor running. Presented in part by the BC Hot Rod Association and the North Shore Outlook, the day was a car lovers dream come true. Fuzzy dice and fancy paint jobs were the norm as the parking lot was transformed into a rainbow of colours and chrome and proud owners posed with their pride and joys of yesteryear.

01 – The Hikida Stephens race team, featuring owners/drivers Bob Stephens and Tom Whiffin, draw a big crowd with their 2,000 hp, 1966 dragster.

02 – West Vancouver’s Ron Price is looking nice in his always stylish 1966 Shelby Cobra in classic navy blue.

03 – This blue beauty is the belle of the ball – a 1954 Chevy Bel Air two door hardtop owned by the North Shore’s own Graeme Tait.

04 – Henry Tjart’s orange 1936 Ford Roadster is one of only 3,000 ever made and comes equipped with rumble seat – wink wink.

05 – The purple and white interior of Barry Watson’s beautiful 1950 Mercury coupe comes complete with plastic dice shifters and looks a little like a naughty night in Vegas.

06 – Pete Graw’s mint green 1956 Ford F150 truck is a true original which he named “Last Date”. He, his wife and their Gorilla mascot travel the continent to take part in shows like this.

07 – West Vancouver’s Denny Bromley is a proud 1923 Ford Model-T coupe owner. The car still has its old fashioned headlights that used to burn lamp oil and its wooden frame trunk.
