  • Cory Monteith of Glee opens first Pinkberry store in Canada at West Vancouver’s Park Royal Village

    cory_monteith_glee.jpg
I scream, you scream, we all scream for . . . Okay, it’s not ice cream exactly, but according to hundreds of teenage girls, it was definitely worth screaming about. Last week, Pinkberry frozen yogurt opened it’s first ever store in Canada in West Vancouver at The Village at Park Royal Shopping Centre. The hip West Hollywood treat, popular with movie stars like Lindsay Lohan, also caused a big stir by bringing along local actor and “Glee” TV heartthrob Cory Monteith. Monteith and his band Bonnie Dune played two sets and signed autographs to the squealing delight of star struck teens. Also last week, the North Vancouver Chamber held their Summer Soiree evening at Seymour Golf and Country Club. It was a chance to welcome new members, celebrate milestones and introduce new board members for the upcoming year.

  • Vancouver Leo Awards 2011 featuring celebrities Amanda Tapping, Ryan Robbins, Tyler Labine and more.

    amanda_tapping.jpg
Every year the Leo Awards manage to bring a big dose of Hollywood glamour to the city. This past weekend, it was once again lights, camera and action time at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. Complete with red carpet arrivals, movie stars and local industry heavies, this night is all about honouring BC’s best in the film and television industry. I’ve often called it the British Columbia “Oscars”, but it’s really much more important because this is where those big careers start and the quality of products that are produced here is absolutely top notch. The biggest round of applause however goes out to the North Shore’s own Walter Daroshin and Sonny Wong. Without these business partners/producers, the Leo Awards simply wouldn’t exist. Congrats to all of this year’s nominees and winners.

There’s just something special about this place that always feels good every time you go there. Whether it’s a fancy occasion dance with live music, working out with the Fit Fellas, stopping by the woodworking shop or just dropping in for lunch, this place is always happening. Clearly, it is their people that make all the magic and never was this more true than for the fabulous group of volunteers that give their time and energy to all kinds of activities. Last week, at a special private reception, the centre paid tribute to their volunteers with an afternoon of live music, food, fun and more. Congrats to everyone and keep up the good work.

Wine makers dinners, luncheons, seminars and the much heralded grand tasting room events meant there was something for every grape lovers in the lower mainland. • Athletics for Kids Boxing Gala Is a Hit at West Vancouver Hollyburn Country Club

    boxing_girls.jpg

Sometimes getting in the game is hard, especially for those living close to the poverty line. Hockey gear, soccer gear, baseball gear and registration fees, are costs that sometimes add up to a young person not being able to participate. Fortunately, there’s the good folks behind the Athletics for Kids organization (A4K). They’re out to even the score by supplying financially disadvantaged youth with access to community amateur sports programs. Last week, the 9th Annual A4K Boxing Dinner Gala helped raise funds via an elegant black-tie night out at West Vancouver’s Hollyburn Country Club. Round one was a martini reception, complete with silent auction items galore. Then it was time for a beautiful three-course dinner, a live auction, and then the main event – five rounds of Olympic rules sanctioned boxing. Congrats to all involved.

    a4k_boxing.jpg

01 – Put up your dukes, let’s get down to it. Boxing buddies Bob Leblevec, left, Dave Bird, Todd Wall and Brad Wolgs play it up for the camera during the before dinner reception.

  • Vancouver Twestival 2011 at Vancouver Lookout and Waldorf School Festival of the Arts Show

    Miss604_vancouver

If Twitter is the new way of sharing information, then a “Twestival” may be the new way of raising money. Started in London in 2008, this nouveau idea is now much more than a fad. With over 200 cities participating, it has become an annual social night out event that proves you really can think globally and act locally. So big congratulations go out to Vancouver’s elite tweeters who helped raise over $8,000 at last week’s YVR Twestival on behalf of local charity Beauty Night Society – an organization that helps give self-esteem to women living in poverty. And speaking of annual events, North Vancouver’s Waldorf School held their spring Festival of the Arts last week at Centennial Theatre. Showcasing students from Grades 2 – 12, it was a night of music, drama and handicrafts on display for friends and family to enjoy.

  • International Women’s Day, Vancouver Symphony, Ron Holland Yachts and more

international_womens_day.jpgInternational Women’s Day made headlines this week all around the world as the global community stood up to celebrate the achievements of lovely ladies everywhere. Here in this city, Women United in Philanthropy (benefitting the United Way and Success by Six) managed to raise about $40,000 for their programs by holding an elegant fashion show luncheon event in honour of the occasion at Leones in Vancouver. Also this week, West Vancouver busineswoman and political dynamo Leah Costello had barely finished hanging the art on the walls of her new home as she held an exclusive welcome reception for MP John Weston and visiting Immigration Minister Jason Kenney. Patrons of the arts were also given a treat this month at a special Vancouver Symphony Orchestra night as Maestro Bramwell Tovey presented Telus head honcho Darren Entwistle with a special signed photograph thanking the corp for their more than 60 years of support. And lastly, it was a salute to the seven seas as world-famous yacht designer Ron Holland was recognized at a private reception in False Creek as he opened his first ever North American office here in Vancouver.

  • Gene Simmons, Brett Wilson at Operation Western Front Gala for True Patriot Love Foundation

gene_simmons_kiss.jpgKhakis and cocktail dresses were on my marching orders last week as one of the most spectacular gala evenings ever to hit Vancouver was held in honour of the True Patriot Love Foundation. “Operation Western Front” was co-chaired by businessmen Warren M. Spitz and W. Brett Wilson (of CBC’s Dragons’ Den fame). Together they turned the Vancouver Convention Centre into a quasi military style forward operation base complete with camo, ammo and Hollywood glam-o. During the elegant reception, guests were more than moved by artist Dave Sopha’s “Portraits of Honour” (www.portraitsofhonour.ca) – a massive tribute to the fallen in Afghanistan. Then, a real live patrolling helicopter buzzed the ballroom outside the windows ordering everyone to take their military dinner tray to the five-star buffet line for “chow time”. A touching tribute by singer John McDermott and a lively auction featuring KISS rock star Gene Simmons helped round out a special evening that raised over $1.5 million for military families and veterans in need. Congrats to all involved.

  • Looking Glass Foundation Gala at Rocky Mountaineer for Anorexia and Bulimia

beach_house_boys.jpgThe 7th Annual Looking Glass Foundation Gala dinner was held last week and it was truly a time to celebrate as supporters and family members of those suffering from Anorexia Nervosa and/or Bulimia reached a major goal. After 10 long years, the doors are finally open at Woodstone Residence, a much-needed facility that caters exclusively to this debilitating disease which continues to affect many young women. “We were able to reach out worldwide to reduce the stigma of eating disorders and let people know that eating disorders are a serious illness, not a choice,” says the foundation. Decorated in elegance and style, the Rocky Mountaineer Station played host to a gourmet dinner, fabulous entertainment and lots of silent auction prizes to help fundraise on this special history making night. Congrats to all involved.
