It’s been a time of Olympic celebrations as Sochi 2014 celebrates the best in winter sports and achievement. Hard to believe that it was only four short years ago that Vancouver was in the world spotlight showing off our city and its people. Reliving the moments was all part of the theme at the recent XL Leadership Summit opening night reception event. Sponsored by the TwentyTen Group, the night was filled with the who’s who of Vancouver 2010 as everyone remembered the good times and laughed at the fun. The evening also marked the anniversary of the 2010 Opening Ceremonies as John Furlong took to the stage to share some rare behind-the-scenes stories. There was also a special announcement in store as TwentyTen Group founder Andrea Shaw took to the stage to say that the Olympic flame would be lit that night, and every other night, that Canadians won gold in Sochi. Go Canada!

  • West Vancouver Soccer Safiya Cup for Cancer

They say it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game. Never before has that statement been more true than at last week’s first annual Safiya Cup. Held at West Vancouver’s Pauline Johnson School, this U13 boys round robin tournament was more about fun and fundraising than anything else. It was inspired by the story of a beautiful young girl who tragically passed away late last year due to lymphoma. Ten year-old Safiya Mawani came from a soccer family where she and her brother Zia played for the local team. She won the hearts of everyone she touched. In honour of her memory, coaches, friends and family came together to put on this amazing community event. Some tears but lots of cheers were the order of the day as everyone was reminded yet again that the real battles in life almost always take place off the field. All proceeds raised go to the BC Cancer Foundation.

  • Mosquito Creek Boat Show in North Vancouver

    Anne drewa wesla wong
Is this North Vancouver or Monte Carlo? It was hard to tell the difference as the sun beamed down on 2,000+ feet of luxury sailboats and power yachts at the opening night of The 6th Annual Boat Show at the Creek. “The end of the summer is a perfect time for a new boat”, proclaimed Mosquito Creek GM Donny Mekilok as he welcomed guests and VIPs to the opening night celebration party. Held aboard Paul Cheung’s stunning Celebration on Water converted ferry boat, the venue was yet another glamorous addition to the already popular event. Canapes, wine and live music helped kick-off a full weekend of boating fun and congratulations goes out to all the people who helped make this event possible.

  • KidSport Dinner in the Park Gala Vancouver

Last week, I had the honour of returning from Europe aboard the same flight as our Canadian Paralympians fresh from their London 2012 experience. Little did I know that later that same week I would have the chance to dine with them and their Olympic compatriots at the first annual KidSport Dinner in the Park gala fundraiser. Gold, silver and bronze medals were everywhere as guests got a chance to get up close and personal with our country’s athletes as they shared their stories with everyone. With the belief that “no kid should be left on the sidellines”, this KidSport charitable event also included an elegant and delicious four-course meal prepared by the Sequoia Company of Restaurants’ expert chefs. A silent auction, live auction and live entertainment helped round out an inspiring night of giving that will go a long way to ensuring “All Kids Can Play”. www.kidsportcanada.ca

01 – Pretty PR gals Axelle D’Anglemont, left, and Nessa van Bergen ensure all the athletes are properly introduced to guests as they arrive. Fun job!

02 – Dripping in medals from both Beijing and London, gold medal wheelchair sprinter and former Paralympic basketball champ Michelle Stilwell is the only female Paralympic athlete to have ever won gold in two separate summer sport events.

05 – It was a super silver on what the press dubbed “Super Saturday” at London 2012 when swimmer Ryan Cochrane touched the wall to win in the gruelling 1,500m freestyle.

06 – Rebecca Khoury, left, president of Karate Canada joins West Vancouver’s favourite Olympian Charmaine Crooks to support this great organization.

  • Go Canada Go Rally for London 2012 Olympics

Olympic fever has returned! But this time, instead of cheering our athletes on from our own backyard, we’ll have to shout a little louder to make ourselves heard all the way across the Atlantic. That was the sentiment last week as West Vancouver’s Park Royal Shopping Centre held a special “Go Canada Go” pep rally and parade in celebration of the start of the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Drummers assembled in south side village to start the march which then proceeded across to the north mall at which time the public was treated to an Olympic summer fashion show and treats all in the name of cheering for the home team. And while we may have traded in our red mittens for red sunglasses, it’s easy to remember just how proud we feel every time we see that red maple leaf. O Canada!

01 – It’s a great place to catch up on all the events! Cheering on our team from the fabulous lounge at the Cactus Club are servers Kyra Crookbain, left, Nicole Wei and Roxanna Rastan.
