  • Gordon Smith Art Gallery Gala

The Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art is one of North Vancouver’s newest and most prestigious places. Built last year, the gallery is purported to be the only public gallery “dedicated to young audiences” which exhibits works of art created through the Artist for Kids (AFK) collection. Last week, patrons of the arts gathered at the gallery to celebrate and raise funds at a gala that included a gourmet meal by Hawksworth restaurant, live auction items and entertainment by Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne.

  • Chat to the Future Uganda Gala in West Vancouver

They say the world is a small place and that we are all connected in one way or another. Never before was that more true than last weekend as West Vancouver’s Richard and Heidi Coglon opened their home, and their hearts, to host an especially touching gala event in support of Ugandan orphans and the new “CHAT House” concept of giving. CHAT to the Future (which stands for Care and Hope through Adoption and Technology), connects sponsors and kids like nothing before it. Using Skype and email, sponsors actually get to know their sponsor child personally and see firsthand the impact they are making on their lives. This night, a special live Skype session allowed guests to be entertained live from Kasangati, Uganda as all of the CHAT House kids sang special holiday songs and danced for the crowd via the internet. Guests like Canucks’ Paolo and Clara Aquilini and La Stella Vineyard owners Saeedeh and Sean Salem were also instrumental in organizing the event and donating to the night which raised over $50,000+.

  • Whistler Cornucopia Wine and Food Festival 2013

It’s one of Whistler’s biggest events of the year – and this year it just got bigger. Whistler’s 17th Annual Cornucopia food and wine festival is on now and there’s lot of new stuff happening. Usually held for only one weekend, this year the festival has expanded to a full 11 days and two weekends. Sponsored by North Shore based BlueShore Financial, the event is known for its famous winemakers’ dinners, tasting seminars and wild after parties. This year’s version however has a mellower tone. Putting the focus back on the wine, attendees and guests can walk from event to event with ease and experience all that Whistler has to offer before the big ski season hits. The festival continues all this weekend.

  • Sparkle Gala is West Vancouver’s Best

It may very well have been the party of the year. Last week, Wear Else clothing store owner Zahra Mamdani opened her palatial West Vancouver home and, with the help of an amazing group of local committee members, helped host the first annual “Sparkle” gala event in support of BC Women’s Hospital and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Designed primarily to raise awareness of the needs of the NICU and its families, the night included a spectacular fashion show complete with an elevated catwalk carefully constructed in the pool. Live entertainment, great food, heart-warming stories and silver glitter covered chocolates all helped make this event extra elegant. The best news is the giving has only begun. Stay tuned for more as this campaign heads into high gear with the goal of helping even more babies and their families. Thanks to the many generous donations raised this night. • Singer Chantal Kreviazuk Headlines Baldy Hughes Gala

It’s called a “Therapeutic Community” and it works. Inspired and modelled on the San Patrignano community in Italy, the Baldy Hughes centre is a highly-effective, year-long addiction treatment facility located outside Prince George. It was brought to life by former West Vancouver businessman and founding member Kevin England and a team of philanthropic citizens who are part of the BC New Hope Recovery Society. Their mandate, treat addiction while emphasizing a return to positive citizenship. “Being part of something greater than themselves and being held accountable – often for the first time in their lives – is a transformational experience for these men, many who were thought to be beyond hope” says England. Last month, a Gratitude Celebration Gala was held at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver featuring Juno-award winning singer Chantal Kreviazuk. With passion and grace, Kreviazuk helped the society raise money for the ongoing support of this facility which is offered free of charge to qualifying men in need of support. In years past, Brian Jessel has welcomed names like Jay Leno and CeeLo Green. No wonder his annual BMW Cabriolet Gala is one of Vancouver’s most sought after and entertaining fundraisers.

This year marked the 8th annual event and, as expected, all of this city’s best dressed were on hand to enjoy an evening of celebration and raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. Posh live and silent auction items tempted supporters to bid their best as go-go dancers and sexy ladies on swings helped add to the decor. Extra special this year was an sultry VIP lounge complete with sleek black lounging couches and a fabulous front row seat for all the upcoming action on stage.

Leading Vancouver restaurants, like Joe Fortes and Hy’s Restaurant, supplied the canapes as guests sipped on everything from Belvedere Vodka to Tavi tequila. Sweet Soul Burlesque dancers then got everyone warmed up with their “cheeky” and flirty performance before Rosette took to the stage to sing her latest hits. The night ended with headliner Colin James rocking out to a filled VIP audience that was more than happy to kick up their heels to all of his biggest hits.

  • Odd Squad Productions Gala Royale 2013 in Vancouver

Back in 1997, long before reality TV and YouTube, the Odd Squad Productions team took their cameras and hit the streets of Vancouver. Focusing mainly on the downtown east side, theses police officers on video captured the true picture of life on the streets complete with all of its sadness, ugliness and drama. Today, these award-winning films serve as a raw and stark reminder to kids everywhere that drugs, and life on the street, are anything but glamorous. Last week, the Odd Squad Productions Society held its 2013 Gala Royale. VIPs, supporters and sponsors enjoyed a night of food, auction items and entertainment while helping raise money for this very worthwhile cause with the message that a happy ending is always possible.

  • Leo Awards 2013 Vancouver Film – Part II

For 15 years now, the Leo Awards have helped shine the spotlight on hundreds of talented people working in BC film and television. And yet, after all these years, it happily continues to mix glamour and humility into a perfect combination that seems to get only better with age.

The actual Leo Awards gala event, held this past Saturday at Vancouver’s Westin Bayshore Hotel, is an annual “Oscar” style evening complete with red carpet, champagne reception, live music, gourmet dinner and, of course, the awards show itself.

The big night has always been a favourite of mine. And after covering the “Leos” for about 13 years now (see archive here), this veteran can truly say that this year’s anniversary show was one of the best.

Maybe it was because of all the beautiful young starlets – each one dressed to cover model perfection as they stepped onto their first real red carpet. Maybe it was the fabulous live orchestra led by the amazing Hal Beckett. Or maybe it was all the handsome leading men, like Ryan Robbins, Ben Ratner and Ian Tracey – each a seasoned professional with big bankability here in BC and beyond.

All of these elements were there. But maybe the biggest reason for success was the sense of accomplishment and sincerity that show producers Walter Daroshin and Sonny Wong again managed to weave into a magical evening where, for one night only, it was okay for this tight-knit local industry to stand up and do a little well-earned Hollywood style chest thumping.

The night began with a bang as actress Beverley Elliott, who plays the role of “Granny” in ABC TV’s Once Upon a Time series,  got on stage to sing a rabble-rousing version of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep”. Entitled “Filming in BC”, the song was a hilarious reference to many of the ins and outs of working in the industry. It also poked fun at directors, producers and BC Film’s recent campaign for government tax cuts – all of which garnered big laughs and cheers from the audience.

Next up – the comedic husband and wife duo of Brent Butt and Nancy Robertson. Needing little introduction, the pair launched into a routine of perfectly timed jabs and jokes – and some not so perfectly planned improvised moments that turned out to be more hilarious than the planned script. No one was safe as they took pot shots at everything from the technical difficulties to the long-winded awards presentation itself.

Other highlights this evening included a special 40th anniversary tribute by actor Jackson Davies to the legendary The Beachcombers series – a series which not only put the west coast of Canada on the map, but also triggered the birth of Hollywood North. Also this night, the many achievements of producer/director David Nutter were honoured with the Stephen J. Cannell award for all of  great work in BC – much of which dates back to the days of Johnny Depp in 21 Jump Street.

Still, the night belonged to the nominees and Leo Award honourees who will hopefully look back on it all as a night to remember. And whether their careers take them all the way to the Academy Awards, or just to the next cattle call, I know they will all never forget that it all started right here in little ol’ British Columbia.

01 – Hubba hubba! Looking just as tall and handsome in real life, Property Brothers stars Drew Scott, left, and Jonathan Scott, right, are Leo presenters this night. Playing man in the middle, big brother JD comes along to keep them out of trouble.

03 – Always in character, actor Michael Eklund shares a red carpet moment with Leo Awards president Walter Daroshin. Eklund would later take home the award for his work in Errors of the Human Body – a project he said was “life changing” in many ways.

04 – The cast members and Leo nominees of Becoming Redwood walk the red carpet in style. From left: director  Jesse James Miller, actor Ryan Grantham and actress Jennifer Copping. Both Miller and Copping would take home Leos this night for their work in The Good Son – The Life of Ray ‘Boom Boom’ Mancini and for Becoming Redwood respectively.

05 – He’s a charming lead man in every way. Actor Michael Shanks, of Stargate and Smallville fame, takes home a Leo for his work in Saving Hope.

06 – She’s always the epitome of elegance on every red carpet. This year, actress Amanda Tapping walks the walk in a sleek and stylish black pantsuit. Win!

07 – Taya Clyne is adorable in every way, yet carries herself with the seasoned confidence of a true pro. Taking home the Leo for “Best Female Performance in a Short Drama”, she also wins my vote for best dressed in her fabulous fuchsia gown.

08 – You know you’re in for a good time with comedians Brent Butt and Nancy Robertson as hosts. Chatting with Leo Awards president Walter Daroshin prior to the show, the trio poses for media photos together on the red carpet.

  • BC Film and Television Leo Awards 2013

I’ve always said it’s like a little bit of the Academy Awards right here in BC – but the truth is that the Leo Awards are much much more. And when you consider all the talented people that work in BC film and television, there really is a lot to celebrate. The 15th anniversary gala of the Leo Awards was held last weekend as the Westin Bayshore rolled out the red carpet and put on the ritz to welcome a record number of deserving nominees. The local stars, directors, producers, voice actors and stuntmen that have helped make Hollywood North a reality were all winners. Comedians Brent Butt and wife Nancy Robertson were spectacular as hosts and live music by Hal Beckett and The Vancouver Film Orchestra really added big glamour to make this one of the best years ever!

A delicious buffet dinner, live music and silent auction items helped raise funds for the North Shore Rescue team. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Music however was in full swing and, as far as one young man was concerned, it was about to change his life forever. The overall celebration however simply could not be confined to just one day as Dal and his wife Muriel have made several appearances at various events across the city. Located at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, it was an evening of live music, good food and fabulous memories which ended with Dal himself singing his signature favourite song – “As Time Goes By”. Needless to say, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Happy Birthday Dal!

For over 60 years now, Family Services of the North Shore has been raising money and helping people in our community. Out of work, family distress, counselling and more are all part of what they provide to people in need. • Mission Possible Gala Tackles Vancouver Downtown Eastside Homelessness and Poverty

Homelessness and poverty are a very real issue in our city, especially in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES). Thankfully, the folks at Mission Possible are out to improve life for those burdened with the hardships of living in one of Canada’s toughest communities. The agency, which aims to provide both opportunities and jobs, administers programs through four separate entities (Community, Maintenance, Recycling and StudioWorks). The end goal is to allow participants to gain dignity and purpose thus ending dependency and breaking the poverty cycle. Last week, the Mission Possible Gala was held at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver and lot of North Shore supporters were in attendance. Visit their website at www.mission-possible.ca to get involved.
