  • West Vancouver Harmony Arts Festival

The 19th Annual Harmony Arts Festival is always a favourite among locals, but this year, thanks to some spectacular record breaking temperatures, the crowds have gotten bigger and bigger. Art displays, children’s activities, youth rock, weekend craft fairs, evening outdoor movies and live concerts by the sea are all part of the festival that just wrapped up this past weekend with a spectacular outdoor show by Nearly Neil’s own Bobby Bruce. Last week, The Vancouver Music Industry (VMI) held its fourth annual Gala and Golf Event to benefit the Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach. The spectacular looking Sarah was there in person and looking oh so very hot-hot-hot in a spectacular blue and green gown and fabulous summertime tan. The evening’s highlight came when Bruce Allen presented the Bruce Allen/ Sam Feldman Legend Award to North Vancouver’s famous Bryan Adams and his fabulous song writing partner Jim Vallance who is responsible for the chart topping hits of Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, Heart and Alice Cooper, to name a few. • Edge on Granville Opening in Vancouver

Granville Street is cleaning up its act – and a large part of that is due to a few good people from the North Shore. The Edge Social Grille & Lounge (1100 Granville) is attached to the Chateau Granville Hotel and is one of the new shining stars on the see-and-be-seen, scene. Owned by experienced hotelier and West Vancouverite Amir Virani, last week the new crew celebrated with a opening night party that included media and VIP guests. The inside is sexy sleek and, with room for both parties and dining, the atmosphere is classy and cool. Keep your eyes on this up-and-comer and the fabulous folks who help make it all happen.

    Richard Brodeur

Former Canucks superstar goalie “King” Richard Brodeur was the headliner last week at the first annual Tee Off Fore Breast Cancer tournament at Meadow Gardens. Pink balloon archways, and a live Elvis impersonator, greeted all the North Shore golfers who made the trip east to play in support of this worthwhile cause. Organizers did a fantastic job supplying goodies and beverages at every hole and the fun didn’t stop there. A fabulous dinner, live and silent auction prizes and live entertainment ensured everyone went home feeling like a winner – despite that demoralizing 18th water hole – WOW! (more…)

  • West Van Library Croquet Tournament

It’s always been one of my favourites and this year was no exception. It was luck year 13 for the West Vancouver Memorial Library Foundation as they held their annual 2009 Mallet Masters Croquet Tournament down at the Ambleside Greens pitch-n-putt. Dressed in their whites, teams took to the courts to play the day away. Later, the champions took to centre court to settle the score as cocktail hour started. A beautiful dinner, provided by Glowbal catering, was then followed by a vibrant live auction with golf packages, wine packages and more up for grabs.

  • Zen Sushi Oceanwise in West Vancouver

Sushi is one of my favourites. But when you savour that melt-in-your-mouth sashimi –  it’s sometimes easy to forget about the impact it has on today’s aquaculture. So now, thanks to the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise Conservation Program, we can all learn to make smarter choices. West Vancouver’s Zen Sushi is leading the way by becoming Metro Vancouver’s first Ocean Wise sushi restaurant. During a special event last week, Aquarium reps joined chef Nobu and staff to feature hand made specialities and to launch the new SeaChoice Sustainable Sushi Guide. <www.seachoice.org> Congrats to all. • Athletics for Kids Boxing Gala

It was time for bow ties and boxing gloves as the 7th annual Athletics for Kids (A4K) Boxing Gala was held last Friday at Hollyburn Country Club. Rock 101 FM’s Bro Jake “The Champ” Edwards had them rolling in the aisles as he helped MC the evening which included a glamorous martini reception, big steak dinner and five rounds of Olympic sanctioned boxing. Helping raise money for kids who can’t afford to play sports is the goal of these go-getters, and they continue to do so in style thanks to the many who came out in support. (more…)

  • V is for Variety – Earls Yaletown Event

V is for Variety, The Children’s Charity that is. But V is also for Vodka, Vancouver and Va-va-va-voom. At least that’s the way I’d describe the new Earls hotspot in trendy Yaletown. West Vancouver’s Fuller family has done it again by re-inventing style in the upper loft of their newest location. Designed for private parties and a more “upscale” experience, the room is nothing short of spectacular. “Vodka is at the heart of V,” explained general manager Ryan Emmerson who opened the doors with a special fundraiser for the kids earlier this month. • BC Chef’s Society Dinner

    Thomas Haas Chef
    Thomas Haas Chef

It was billed as the dinner of a lifetime. North Vancouver’s own Pino Posteraro, of Cioppino’s Mediterranean Grill fame in Yaletown, played host to an elite group of famous foodies at his restaurant earlier this month to serve a $500 a plate, 12-course feast in support of the BC’s Chefs’ Table Soiety (CTS). The “Senza Frontiere” (without borders) dinner helped raise funds for the creation of bursaries and scholarships for young, emerging, student chefs. Vancouver’s finest chefs shared kitchen duty as they put their egos on hold and cooked up a storm that was dressed to impress. Congrats. (more…)

    John Reynolds MP
    John Reynolds MP

Did you make any New Year’s resolutions this year? If you did, and you’re finding it hard to stick to some of them, then maybe this can be an inspiration. West Vancouver’s Don Rutledge, who is better known for his involvement in race cars, the hospitality industry and investment portfolios, made a pledge last year. It was time to give something back to himself, and others. So he started to train, and with the help of some very influential friends, he qualified for the ING New York City Marathon. It was time for his friends to pay up on the bet – a bet that helped raise money for a very worthwhile cause – the Zajac Foundation for kids.

  • A New Year’s Toast to 2009

    Beach House New Year 2009

Let’s raise a glass to old and new, and all the things we say and do. Sometimes, it passes oh so fast – but thanks to photos, it can last. The parties, full of fun and cheer – helped us ring in a brand new New Year. And the faces say it all so well, plus there’s always a great tale to tell. So thank you for your smiles so bright, and inviting me to share each night. Without you it would be a bore – but life is good on our North Shore. So here’s a toast to both yours and mine – and all the best in 2009. (more…)

  • Pandora’s Vox and Espiritu Vocal Christmas

I’ve been a HUGE fan of the lovely ladies of West Vancouver’s Pandora’s Vox for close to 15 years now and I can’t say enough. Performing this past week at the Kay Meek Centre in “Gifted” with their partner vocal ensemble Espiritu, the group has grown into one of the most entertaining and professional choir organizations in the country. From impressive pieces like “Lux Aurumque” (my fave) to silly seasonal songs like “Fruitcake”, this group never fails to deliver. Choir leader Gillian Hunt, who also thrilled audiences with her special rendition of “Little Drummer Boy”, was honoured in a surprise presentation by the members who, without her knowledge, nominated her for the BC Choral Federation’s prestigious Amy Ferguson Award. Hunt was presented with the award during the Friday show. (more…)
