Asian New Year Festival in West Vancouver

It was one of the most colourful affairs ever to be held at Park Royal’s main court as West Vancouver MP John Weston and a whole host of volunteers came out to celebrate Asian New Year. Traditional lion dances, arts, crafts, live performances, presentations and lots of food helped mark the occasion. Dignitaries and invited guests were joined by members from the Canadian-Chinese Outreach Committee and the North Shore Korean Youth Community to bring the whole event together. Clearly the “Year of the Snake” is off to a great sssssss-start!

Grammy 2013 Awards – Wardrobe Fashion Rules and Who Broke Them

It’s true. CBS actually sent out an email to Grammy attendees warning them to cover up, and in some cases, shut up.

The letter, which outlines exactly what is and isn’t acceptable at this year’s 2013 awards show, warns against everything from bare bums and boobs to swear words, foreign swear words and political causes.

The reasons behind it all is no doubt due to numerous “wardrobe malfunctions” and slippery nipple effects that seem to have drawn the ire of network executives who are tired of stars trying to grab more than their fair share of the spotlight. See for yourself below:

Bare sides or under curvature of the breasts is also problematic. Please avoid sheer see-through clothing that could possibly expose female breast nipples. Please be sure the genital region is adequately covered so that there is no visible “puffy” bare skin exposure. Please avoid commercial identification of actual brand name products on T-shirts. Foreign language on wardrobe will need to be cleared. OBSCENITY OR PARTIALLY SEEN OBSCENITY ON WARDROBE IS UNACCEPTABLE FOR BROADCAST. This as well, pertains to audience members that appear on camera. Finally, The Network requests that any organized cause visibly spelled out on talent’s wardrobe be avoided. This would include lapel pins or any other form of accessory.

Overall, the fashion faux pas seem to have gone away for now. But don’t dismay, there was still enough red carpet cleavage to go around, much to the delight of camera crews everywhere who were quick to snap a shot of the best assets on the red carpet.

Real Housewives of Vancouver Season Two Premiere Party

Vancouver’s real housewives are back – for season two! This night, the glam girls gathered at the Loden Hotel in downtown Vancouver to watch the premiere episode of Real Housewives of Vancouver – Season Two with friends, family and invite only guests.

The champagne was flowing and the ladies all sparkled in fabulous bejewelled gowns and designer name accessories. New wives Ioulia Reynolds, Amanda Hansen and Robin Reichman joined returning stars Jody Claman, Mary Zilba and Ronnie Negus for a night of celebrity celebration. It was hugs and kisses all round as guests walked the red carpet.

Fashion wise, it was basic black mixed with sparkles everywhere you looked. Mary, Ronnie and Ioulia rocked the red carpet in anything-but-basic black which made them all look equally gorgeous, elegant and fetching.

West Vancouver’s flamboyant mother-daughter team of Mia and Jody Claman were big time Hollywood glam in floor length bejewelled gowns which sparkled even more than the Moet. And newcomers Robin and Amanda were extra glittery in gold and see-through hues encrusted with enough sequins and beads to make Cher jealous. Personally, I adored every single outfit and think it helped make the premiere extra special in every way.

After the reception, it was time to see the action – and reactions. Everyone turned to the televisions as nervous giggles filled the air. In the end, it was a spectacular evening that sets the stage for an even more exciting season of entertainment and fun.

Looking Glass Foundation for Eating Disorders Ninth Annual Gala

Eating disorders are serious. They are not a “phase” – and they are not a “choice” made by vain teenagers. They are actual disease processes that can trap and destroy individuals and their families. Thankfully, the group of dedicated people behind North Vancouver’s Looking Glass Foundation know more about these conditions than most and they’re reaching out with helping hands. Summer camp, support groups and ongoing support of the Woodstone residence are all part of the mandate to change lives for the better. Last Friday, the group held their 9th annual benefit gala at the Rocky Mountaineer Station where guests enjoyed a gourmet gala meal, silent auction, informational speeches and live entertainment. Congrats to all involved!

Dine Out Vancouver Festival 2013 North Shore Picks

It was once the slow time of year for restaurants. But now, tables are full and kitchens are hopping thanks to Tourism Vancouver’s 2013 Dine Out Vancouver Festival. Taking place until Feb 3, participating restaurants are offering a choice of either $18, $28 or $38 set menus featuring some of the best items from their regular menus. New Two Lions Public House Opens in North Vancouver

The New Year is always a good time for a little resolution and change. Such is the case with a North Vancouver entertainment group that is anxious to bring the party back all year long. The Two Lions Public House, formerly known as the Mosquito Creek Bar & Grill, has swung open its doors to a new crowd, new menu and new attitude. Now owned by the Jennings Hospitality & Culture group (who also own the Narrows Pub, London Pub, Caffe Brixton and The Manchester), the establishment has been renovated in more ways than one. Comfort food, local beers, hockey games and karaoke are all still there though as is the live music roster which will include appearances by former Roxy house band Joe’s Garage. The opening night party took place last week where friends and guests were invited for a sneak peek look at what’s in store. Cheers!

Dal Richards Music Man 95th Birthday

Back in 1918, the world danced to a different beat. World War I was just ending, and radio was just beginning. Music however was in full swing and, as far as one young man was concerned, it was about to change his life forever. Dal Richards, known across Canada as the consummate band leader, turned 95 years young on January 5th. The overall celebration however simply could not be confined to just one day as Dal and his wife Muriel have made several appearances at various events across the city. One of the most glamorous events was held last Sunday night as friends and well-wishers from all across the land came out to wish Dal well at the nostalgic “The Roof” venue. Located at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, it was an evening of live music, good food and fabulous memories which ended with Dal himself singing his signature favourite song – “As Time Goes By”. Needless to say, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Happy Birthday Dal!

Vancouver Upcoming Gala Events for 2013

Happy New Year everyone! And just as you’re finishing putting away the holiday decorations, it’s time to take out your date books and pencil in some spectacular events for the upcoming year. There’s never a shortage of things to do all across the North Shore and charity events are always on the list. The summer months are bursting with community fun and festivals but you’ll want to book off lots of time during May, June, October and November as these are always when the big glamorous galas are held. Check out some of these dates below and be sure to check back with me throughout the year to keep you posted. Best wishes to all.

01 – Kay Meek Centre board member Paul Tutsch, left, West Vancouver councillor Mary Ann Booth and volunteer Barney Ellis were among the many guests at last year’s annual Kay Meek Gala event. This year you’ll want to keep May 31, 2013 clear as they celebrate again with special guest star Holly Cole.

02 – October is a big gala month and they don’t come any bigger than the Gift of Time Gala for Canucks Place Children’s Hospice. Last year lots of North Shore faces were in attendance as Global TV anchor Chris Gailus and radio star Tara Maguire played co-host.

03 – Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation gala chair Mary Jane Devine shows us that the Rockin’ for Research Gala is always hot stuff by posing with members of the fire department as they were auctioned off as part of a fabulous dinner and dine package during last year’s live auction. Mark Nov 2, 2013 on your calendar for this one.

04 – Wine, women and . . well more wine. Whistler’s annual Cornucopia may be considered one of the wildest weekends on the mountain with so many dinners, dances, tastings and parties to attend that come November 2013, they are planning on holding it for a whole week. Hold onto your hats for details.

05 – Formerly known as the Diamond Ball, the 17th Annual Canadian Cancer Society Daffodil Ball will be held on April 27 this year. Black and yellow are all the rage at this event as North Shore golden gals Bryanna Baker, left, Elizabeth Dyer and Carey Macbeth can tell you.

06 – Put up your dukes on April 5, 2013 as Hollyburn Country Club prepares to once again host the A4K – Athletics for Kids extravaganza. It’s a Vegas theme all the way as board members Craig Knapton, left, and Dave Babych get ready for their eleventh year.

A Look Back at Christmas 2012

It has been an eventful holiday season with events almost every day here on the North Shore. Charity luncheons, gala evenings and lights, lights, lights everywhere you look. Here’s hoping you and your family shared in some of these great times and even though Christmas Day is over, there are still lots of activities and events still going on in our neighbourhoods. Don’t forget to take in some of the fun and carry the good cheer with you into the New Year. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas. Can’t wait to see you all again in 2013!

01 – Raising money for the Boys and Girls Club of Vancouver with a “Reach for Outer Space” Children’s Christmas Party, Bianca Fusco Zanatta, centre, hosted her 11th Annual Ladies Luncheon with fabulous friends like “Housewives” guest star Lisa Macdonald, left, and West Vancouver businesswoman Lenora Gates.

02 – Delivering holiday necessities and more, the dynamic Diane Forstyhe-Abbott, left, teamed with YWCA events manager and North Vancouver singer/songwriter Tamara Hung to host the 18th Annual Crabtree Ladies Luncheon.

03 – A little night music – and a lot of lights. There’s still a lot of action happening up at North Vancouver’s Capilano Suspension Bridge for the Canyon Lights festival. Running until Jan 5, be sure to take in the gingerbread cookie decorating, glass ornament blowing and dance to the Holiday Band. Oh yeah, did I mention the LIGHTS!

BC Children’s Hospital Foundation Crystal Ball

It’s one of Vancouver’s best black tie affairs, and one of this province’s best causes. The 26th annual Crystal Ball was held this month in support of the Campaign for BC Children and the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Over $1.1 million was raised as prominent North Shore supporters made their way to the ballroom to join over 400 invited guests at the Four Seasons Hotel for a night of glitz and glamour. This brings the total to $155 million of the close to $200 million needed to fund a new hospital.

01 – Teri Nicholas, president and CEO of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, attends the event with husband Lee. “The Crystal Ball is always a great party, but it’s the impact that the event has had on the quality of care our children receive that is really worth celebrating,” she says.

02 – Known for their overwhelming support and philanthropy, West Vancouver’s Lily and Robert Lee are well known in these generous circles.

It’s a Wonderful Life and Dean Paul Gibson in Vancouver

Dean Paul Gibson – I love you. And let me tell you why.

As director of the Arts Club Theatre Company’s It’s a Wonderful Life, you have taken on a classic and won. You have, quite simply, shown us the magic of a movie we all know and love and, as The Beatles said, . . . let it be.

As a director you are fearless. This I know from watching you for many years at Bard on the Beach and other venues. Your creativity often challenges both your actors and your audience and through it, you achieve absolute moments of brilliance.

How you do it, I don’t know.

But in this outing you are courageous and bold in other ways. By leaving things in place, right where we expect them, you’re letting us, the audience, enjoy the play for all the right holiday reasons.

We know the lines. We know the characters. And we know when we’re supposed to laugh. Thank you for giving us this simple gift through the magic of playwright Philip Grecian and the memories of mogul Frank Capra whose magical film moments you have woven into the play so expertly throughout with the use of background stage vignettes.

And thank you for choosing the right players too – the good stuff we are lucky enough to have here in Vancouver.

Jennifer Lines as Mary Bailey

For treasures like Jennifer Lines (Mary Bailey) and Lindsey Angell (Violet Bick) whose classic styles evoke perfect Capra-esque qualities at every turn. They are true ladies of the court and I never tire of either of them in almost any role.

Thank you also for comic relief actors Jennifer Clement (Tilly) and David Marr (Uncle Billy) who, by the very nature of their roles, provide memorable moments of delightful frustration.

I also can’t say enough about your leading man Bob Frazer. Yet another “Bard” alumnus, he tackles the role of George Bailey with enthusiastic vigour. An intimidating role from the outset, I can only imagine how it must feel to take on the memory of the legendary Jimmy Stewart every night in front of a live audience – all while film excerpts periodically play in the background. Yet somehow, very gently, Frazer manages to own the role for himself – on his terms and timing – both which work very effectively together with delightful results. In fact, I found the scenes with Eileen Barrett (Mother Bailey) to be especially tender – a credit to both players which, for me, is not present in the film.

As for your younger corps members – Hannah Brandon, Rose Fulkner, Sophia Millar, Aidan and Jordan Wessels – well, they’re simply scandalous scene stealers. Too magnificent for words, they win the hearts of the audience from the moment they appear on stage. Teach them well dear Dean as I know they too will have greatness thrust upon them.

In their child roles, they also provide just the right concord of sweet sounds to take on an excellent Alec Willows (Henry Potter), whose only fault is that he is almost too likeable for me to truly be thought on as the villain. I’m also glad to see that Potter finally gets his comeuppance from Clarence – a small detail that is unique to the play itself.

And speaking of dear sweet wing-less Clarence. You have finally been outdone. With the power of the heavens behind him, not to mention 200 Arts Club performances of “Wonderful Life” under his belt, Bernard Cuffling is, again, the toast of Bedford Falls. With an aged innocence, Cuffling’s Clarence is truly adorable. While the film may be more about Bailey, this play is equally about the character of Clarence the angel, and from where I sat in the audience, people were cheering for both to reach the stars.

And so Mr. Gibson, thank you again. For bringing all of us in Vancouver a play to remember and a timeless classic that still holds fast to many of our modern themes today. You did it all with style and elegance and an air of effortless refrain – and I love you for every minute of it. Ring-a-ding-ding.

Family Services of North Shore Christmas Celebration

For over 60 years now, Family Services of the North Shore has been raising money and helping people in our community. Out of work, family distress, counselling and more are all part of what they provide to people in need. Needless to say, the holidays are an extra special time and being there to support families is very important. That’s why the great people at Family Services created the Christmas Bureau section just for this very cause. Last week, at a special “Christmas on the Shore” event, VIP guests and supporters donated $1,000 per couple and came out to enjoy an evening together at The Beach House restaurant in West Vancouver. Thanks to the generosity of the Fuller family (who are owners at the Beach House), everything this night was donated to this cause, including five-star food and more. A live auction this night also included amazing gifts like a Ross Penhall original artwork, an iPhone 5 and a corporate box for the upcoming Lady Gaga concert. Congrats to everyone involved.

Food Network’s Recipe to Riches is Nuts for Don Harquail

Don Harquail has always been the famous friend with the designer desserts. But now, thanks to reality television, this Burnaby hobby chef’s life has just gotten a lot sweeter.

That’s part of the premise behind Food Network Canada’s latest reality show Recipe to Riches. Returning for its second season, the series pits home based cooks against each other in separate categories – all for a chance to win the grand prize of $250,000. The Canada-wide competition is fierce, but Harquail is headed to the finals after winning the Candies and Chocolate category last month for his Triple Nut Toffee. Voting and viewing of the final episode starts tomorrow (Dec 5, 2012).

Judges Laura Calder (French Food at Home) Tony Chapman (Capital C), Dana McCauley (Janes Family Foods) and host Jesse Palmer are not easy to please. But having come this far, Harquail has already won the privilege of having his product packaged and put up for sale in select stores as part of the prestigious President’s Choice product line.

The yummy yellow box is perfectly packaged and also carries a caricature of Don himself complete with delightful depictions of his favourite hobbies (orchids, bowling, cooking). With the added innovation of pine nuts and sesame seeds, this toffee is outright delicious. You’d have to be “nuts” not to like it.

Still, winning the hearts of minds of the public is only part of the equation. The highest standards of all, and the ultimate final word, comes from head honcho Galen Weston, executive chairman of Loblaw Companies. He will figure prominently in the upcoming finals as Harquail faces off against his 6 other competitors to go for the cash.

Interview with Don Harquail – inventor of Triple Nut Toffee and winner of the Chocolates and Candies category on Season Two of Recipe to Riches (Food Network Canada)

CAT: How much fun was it for you to compete in R2R? Did you feel a lot of pressure to win or were you just happy to be participating?

DON: I had so much fun, I think you can see that in the episode, I was having a blast. From the moment I submitted my Recipe to R2R I have been excited. I did not feel much pressure in winning because my main goal was to have fun. I had watched last year episodes several times to familiarize myself with the show. I was a bit nervous before Galen Weston announced the winner – I’m a big Presidents Choice fan and he’s the real deal!

CAT: Where did your original recipe idea come from? Did anyone special help you perfect it?

DON: That is a funny story. I have been making my Triple Nut Toffee for close to 25 years. I acquired part of the recipe from an elderly member of the Vancouver Orchid Society which I am a member. She had not provided me with the proper baking instructions. On my first attempt I ended up with a pile of burnt sticky mess. The whole house was in smoke. I figured I had made a mistake and tried again and got the same result. I could not contact her as she had passed away. I did not give up. I eventually figured out what was wrong and missing. It gave me the opportunity to adapt the recipe to my liking. I added many new ingredients such as pine nuts, cashews, almonds, sesame, seeds, maple syrup and a dab of chocolate to satisfy the chocolate lover. From trial and error it became a success.

CAT: Are you a big dessert person normally or are you also a good kitchen cook/chef? What other things do you like to cook?

DON: I am definitely a big dessert person. I love baking, every week I bake something different for my Bowling Team or my friends at the Vancouver Orchid Society. Every week it’s a surprise. It could be anything from French Macarons to a Five Star Super Chocolate Chip cookie. It gives me a lot of pleasure to see how they enjoy it. Just before going to Bowling or the Orchid society meeting I take a picture of my treats and post it on my Facebook page so they can see it before they get there. It’s so funny to see them run and try to find me.

CAT: What was it like being on a reality show? What was the worst part? What was the best part? Tell us one good behind-the-scenes secret.

DON: Being on a reality show was amazing, what a rush it was to be part of that, it takes a lot of work and a lot of people to put such a show together. You have no idea how hard these people work. The worst part of it was having an incredible secret and not able to say anything to anyone for what seemed like forever. I just kept on focusing. My friends were very nice and stopped asking me questions, The best part on being on this show is that I have made myself two fabulous friends, the two other competitors, Robert Armatta and Lucie Dion. We have been in contact several times, I even went to visit Lucie and her family last summer. We had such a good time, we made Sucre à la crème together.

CAT: How has winning this competition changed your life (has it changed your life)?

DON: Winning and participating in this show has given me a lot more confidence in myself. I did not think I could ever do anything like that. It proved to me once again not to stop just keep on going. Don’t let the Impossible be Possible [sic]. Not only have I done this I have won the Candies and Chocolate category. Amazing!

CAT: What’s up next for you?

DON: This is hard to answer. I enjoyed doing television so much maybe a new door will open there. I have so many wonderful recipes, I may write a cookbook. One thing is certain, I want to try to inspire people not to give up when faced with difficult medical challenges, there is always hope.

Cirque du Soleil’s Amazing Amaluna in Vancouver

Look closer. Did you see it?

Probably not. Because despite everything that’s going on during a Cirque du Soleil performance, it’s the subtle, almost unnoticeable details that truly make it one of the greatest shows on earth.

I always come away impressed, but not for the reasons you may think.

Doesn’t matter if I like the performances (I do). All of them are both weird and wonderful in a fascinating hypnotic way. In fact, I often shake my head in wonderment at how they come up with all these ideas. However, in my opinion, that is not where Cirque’s magic lies.

For me, it’s about the stuff you don’t always notice. It’s the details that, as creator Guy LaLiberte knows, make the difference between mediocre and spectacular. And Amaluna, Cirque’s latest instalment, is no different.

The costumes, the lighting and the sheer engineering energy that it takes to put on this show are staggering. The visually stunning sets and opening pageant number are almost too much for the brain to take in all at once. This is not so hard to notice.

But pause for a minute to consider the mechanics of such an undertaking. Elaborate rigging, custom welded apparatuses, the quick take-down and set-up of on the fly sets are all part of life in this circus. Throw in the precise timing required to help a performer fly around the tent and it becomes clear that there is no room for error. Making it look easy is part of the handbook.

Every performer here is very highly trained. Held to a standard like no other. Each one acts, and reacts, to their environment. Whether they are spotting for a stunt, cleaning the floor of water or setting up for the next act, each one is fully aware that they are always on stage. Again, this is not so hard to notice.

But stop. Check out their eyes. Watch their expressions. The contact they keep with the audience. The glances they exchange as they whirl past each other. The intimacy created during the Cerceau and The Waterbowl scene. The passion exchanged as two “lovers” fly overhead during The Storm sequence. All acting. All drama. And all very important details that bring added tension beyond the fact they’re hanging on for dear life overhead.

I also suspect that every performer is specially trained in what my stage peeps used to call the “perma-smile”. Once again done to Cirque perfection, it’s what makes a potentially boring unicycle dance come to life. Two adorable little faces in glimmering gold outfits “tweedle” about with smiles big enough to reach the back row. Despite their likeness to Dr. Seuss’s “Thing One” and “Thing Two”, all I wanted to do was take them home and keep them.

But when it comes to star “face” performances, the juggling Lizard man has set the standard. A going concern throughout the entire show, performer Viktor Kee’s animation is nothing short of spectacular. Effortlessly catching glowing orbs that fall from the sky, you just know this guy loves wearing this costume. The suggestive stare. The sly smile. He masterfully draws everyone into his act. After shedding his skin, it becomes clear that he is much more than a piece of tail who knows how to handle his … balls?

Finally, one can’t talk about Cirque without mentioning the music. Haunting yet explosive, it is, for me at least, the most important part of the show. While other stage shows seem content with a cutback pit orchestra plugged into too many midi devices, I’m happy to see Cirque settle for nothing less than the full monty. Singers, drummers, strings and guitar players that, in typical Cirque style, are true all-round performers. Dressed in outfits that would make Prince weep with envy, the all-girl band of Amaluna can shred it with the best of them. Precise timing. The perfect splash cymbal. The cresting crescendoes. All custom composed to specifically match each stage theme. Usually hidden in the shadows, I was thrilled to see the musicians play up front much more than usual this time out.

It’s clear that Cirque, and Amaluna, are all about a feast for the senses. Worth the price of admission and more, I highly recommend taking in the magic while it is town this holiday season.

Mission Possible Gala Tackles Vancouver Downtown Eastside Homelessness and Poverty

Homelessness and poverty are a very real issue in our city, especially in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES). Thankfully, the folks at Mission Possible are out to improve life for those burdened with the hardships of living in one of Canada’s toughest communities. The agency, which aims to provide both opportunities and jobs, administers programs through four separate entities (Community, Maintenance, Recycling and StudioWorks). The end goal is to allow participants to gain dignity and purpose thus ending dependency and breaking the poverty cycle. Last week, the Mission Possible Gala was held at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver and lot of North Shore supporters were in attendance. Visit their website at www.mission-possible.ca to get involved.

Penthouse Vancouver Book Launch – Liquor, Lust and The Law

The police have tried to shut it down. A fire almost burned it down. And harder economic times have certainly brought the pressure down. But like a prize fighter who refuses to stay down, The Penthouse nightclub has rolled with the punches and survived to tell the tale of what really happens after dark in Vancouver, over the last 65 years.

That tale is called “Liquor, Lust and The Law” (Arsenal Pulp Press), and it is quickly becoming one of Vancouver’s best selling, secret telling, publications. From its heyday as a glamorous celebrity “rat pack” hangout,where regular big names like Frank Sinatra, Frankie Laine and Louis Armstrong hung out, to its present day status complete with somewhat seedier subplots, The Penthouse has nonetheless stood as a symbol of a bygone era where families did business together in the community amidst an atmosphere of tradition and respect.

Last week, at a special invite only launch party, several of the who’s-who of Vancouver came out to celebrate with Penthouse owner Danny Filippone and his family at this historic occasion. The book’s author, Aaron Chapman, was also on hand to greet guests and sign copies for all the familiar faces in the crowd.

Live music from Goby Catt kept the place hopping as did a steady stream of drinks and canapes. An emotional Danny Filippone was in his element as he spoke to the crowd from the stage about his father and uncles and the memories of days gone by. Never one to let melancholy ruin a good time, the always affable host glad-handed his way around the room welcoming each guest into the family fold. Still, the biggest sparkling star in the crowd this night was easily Danny’s wife Jacqueline who, dressed from head to toe in authentic pink Vegas showgirl style sequins and feathers, rocked the room with all the glitz and glam of a young hollywood starlet. Shake those feathers girl!

Remember the days of poodle skirts, drive-ins and 50s style rock n’ roll? Then good for you Peggy Sue, because you would have fit right in at the fourth annual Amica Helping Hands Gala. Whistler’s Cornucopia 2012 Parties, Wines and Food

For the last 10+ years now I’ve had the privilege of attending Whistler’s annual Cornucopia festival of food and wine. Not for the faint of heart, those who venture beyond Cornucopia’s serious side will find a high energy, full throttle weekend affair full of alcohol and after hours activities that go well into the wee hours of the night. So, as expected, this year’s organizers stopped at nothing to put on the glitz with a whirlwind schedule of seminars, winemaker’s dinners, ultra after-parties, and non-stop fun.

The new High Rollers gala party, held at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler (tix $150), was one of the biggest featuring showgirls, gaming tables, live music and more. I especially liked the entertainment which included a live band complete with horn section – a welcome change, in my opinion, from the usual non-stop, mindless boom-boom beats.

Hanging out at the wine bar felt extra chic as guests lounged on fiber optic electric furniture that changed colour every few minutes (I’ve seriously got to get me some of this). Some complaints resulted because bartenders were bound by our archaic BC Liquor laws and were only permitted to pour small tasting samples instead of full glasses. Drink tickets were issued at the door for various other bar stations, so here’s hoping maybe next year they will include some options for full wine glasses as well.

All around the room, Vegas style showgirls go-go danced on stage while dealers held down all kinds of gambling tables, including several Texas Hold ‘Em games that proved very popular with the men folk. Going “all in” here was relatively harmless though as all games were strictly funny money.

Overall, it was an extremely classy affair which was very professionally produced. Nothing seemed to get too out of hand and I really hope it will be back next year.

Next up was the Crush Grand Gala Tasting room. Held over two nights (Friday and Saturday, tix $89), this event is aptly named as crowds literally crush themselves into the Whistler Convention Centre to sample libations from over 50 different wineries. Not a great event for food, there is nonetheless interesting little sample bites from featured companies and restaurants looking to show off their newest products. Sipping always prevails over spitting, but guests here are encouraged not to over imbibe and taxi rides are always available.

Last big event of the weekend for me was the Araxi Bubbles + Oceans party in Whistler Village (tix $155). Known for their famous sushi and seafood, this restaurant sampling event never disappoints. Tons of fresh prawns, tuna, oysters and maki rolls were available for everyone. Bar and food service was stellar and, not forgetting the bubbles part, there were several different champagne and sparkling wine samples to be had.

Stealing the spotlight this night however was a 50 year James Bond special edition anniversary champagne released by none other than Bollinger. This $200 dollar stealth black bottle comes in a special spy themed canister where one must dial 007 on the locks to release the lid. Add a couple of tuxedo-clad handsome men to serve it up cold and the ladies were easily wooed over to this table with little resistance.

JDRF Rockin’ for Research Gatsby Glamour Gala

Flappers and fringes, jazz and joviality. It was time to put your best foot forward this month for the 13th Annual Rockin’ for Research, Gatsby Glamour gala night. Benefitting the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), this perennial event was founded by local rock band Loverboy in an effort to find a cure for Type 1 juvenile diabetes. Today, it is one of Vancouver’s premiere charity nights. Also honoured at this year’s gala were media giants Canada Wide, CTV, Global TV, The Georgia Straight and our own Black Press who were recognized for their support of JDRF and their overall philanthropic giving.

West Vancouver Library Gala 2012 Passport to Spain

The West Vancouver Memorial Library Foundation held its signature gala event last week. A Passport to Spain was the theme as guests mixed and mingled among the books enjoying tapas, live entertainment, fabulous food and fashions. One of the main highlights included a live Flamenco performance by dancers from the Karen Pitkethly Flamenco group. Overall, the event raised close to $82,000 which will go to support the many programs and services at the library. Congrats to all involved.

Actor Ed Begley Jr Goes Green at Real Estate Awards and Gift of Time Gala

You might remember him best from his role in St. Elsewhere or from his comedy roles in Christopher Guest movies like This is Spinal Tap, but actor Ed Begley Jr is also a lean, green, environmental machine who says that his biggest responsibility is helping out Mother Nature. Speaking at the Real Estate Foundation of BC’s 2012 Land Awards last week, the Hollywood star was the toast of the night. Award winners, guests and VIPs enjoyed a gala dinner night which ended with a book signing, a live dance band and great memories. Also last week, at the Westin Bayshore, the Canucks Place Children’s Hospice’s Gift of Time Gala saw lots of North Shore faces mixing and mingling in their black tie best. North Shore Rotary Food and Wine Festival

The 11th Annual North Shore Rotary Food and Wine Festival took place last week at Park Royal North in West Vancouver. This local event, which featured favourite restaurants paired with BC wine distributors, is always a hit as it gives guests a chance to sup and sample from some of the best local offerings. Live music, displays, entertainment and lots of socializing helped round out the night which helped raise funds for the North Shore Youth Safe House and North Shore Schizophrenic Society.

West Vancouver Pumpkin Festival

It was time to celebrate the harvest last week as the West Vancouver Community Centres Society held their annual Pumpkin Fest at the West Van Recreation Centre. Held over two days, this ultimate family event included fun displays, games, races, live entertainment and more. Contests for best jams, jellies, pumpkins, scarecrows and more were also part of the mix and on Sunday, awards were handed out for best in show. Still, no one left empty handed as everyone who participated went home with a chocolate medal for their efforts. Congrats to everyone involved.

Vancouver International Film Festival Parties 2012

The 31st Annual Vancouver International Film Festival wraps up this week after 16 days of memorable films, fun and faces. Known for being a festival of substance, the event featured over 380 films from all over the world organized into series like Canadian Images, Dragons & Tigers, International Shorts and Cinema of our Time. Still, no festival is complete without a few red carpet parties and premiere galas. Check out a few of the familiar faces below as Vancouver’s more famous locals came out to celebrate.

Singer Sarah McLachlan and Canucks VP Michael Doyle Star in September Events

Fall season is upon us and events are in full swing. First up, a unique West Vancouver event spearheaded by West Vancouver Chamber VP Jason Black. Held at the Tap House in Park Royal, this networking event was targeted for the Under 35 business mind. Featuring Vancouver Canucks VP Michael Doyle, the new Face 2 Face program promises to deliver high profile keynote speakers as well as a chance to socialize with fellow young entrepreneurs. Next, West Vancouver’s most famous resident, Sarah McLachlan, turned the spotlight towards her School of Music students in a heartwarming ceremony that featured a special cheque presentation by HSBC. Hot off the stage at her Voices in the Park concert earlier this month, the charitable chanteuse was on hand to receive the $300,000 donation on behalf of her talented students who then thanked the audience with a live performance.

Mosquito Creek Boat Show in North Vancouver

Is this North Vancouver or Monte Carlo? It was hard to tell the difference as the sun beamed down on 2,000+ feet of luxury sailboats and power yachts at the opening night of The 6th Annual Boat Show at the Creek. “The end of the summer is a perfect time for a new boat”, proclaimed Mosquito Creek GM Donny Mekilok as he welcomed guests and VIPs to the opening night celebration party. Held aboard Paul Cheung’s stunning Celebration on Water converted ferry boat, the venue was yet another glamorous addition to the already popular event. Canapes, wine and live music helped kick-off a full weekend of boating fun and congratulations goes out to all the people who helped make this event possible.

KidSport Dinner in the Park Gala Vancouver

Last week, I had the honour of returning from Europe aboard the same flight as our Canadian Paralympians fresh from their London 2012 experience. Little did I know that later that same week I would have the chance to dine with them and their Olympic compatriots at the first annual KidSport Dinner in the Park gala fundraiser. Gold, silver and bronze medals were everywhere as guests got a chance to get up close and personal with our country’s athletes as they shared their stories with everyone. With the belief that “no kid should be left on the sidellines”, this KidSport charitable event also included an elegant and delicious four-course meal prepared by the Sequoia Company of Restaurants’ expert chefs. A silent auction, live auction and live entertainment helped round out an inspiring night of giving that will go a long way to ensuring “All Kids Can Play”. www.kidsportcanada.ca

Coho Festival in West Vancouver

For over 30 years now the Coho Society of the North Shore has been celebrating the return of the Coho salmon to our local rivers and streams. This annual event, which takes place every September, is marked by a community wide celebration at Ambleside Park which includes the Coho Walk / Run and the very popular salmon barbecue. Delicious for all the right reasons, community leaders are only too happy to volunteer their time to come on out and cook up a storm. Display booths, live music, entertainment and more are all part of the day which goes to promote the preservation of the salmonid species while raising awareness about the importance of protecting the delicate riparian areas which are a signature part of our home town.
