  • Dawn Wells, Roberto Alomar and Fred McGriff in Vancouver

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale . . . Gilligan’s Island actress Dawn Wells was just one of the main draws this past weekend as the Vancouver International Boat Show set up shop at both BC Place and Granville Island. Known for its luxury yachts and famous faces, the four-day event attracted hundreds of water loving enthusiasts and outdoor fans. Also, last week marked the 4th Annual Scotiabank Vancouver Canadians Hot Stove Luncheon. Baseball greats Roberto Alomar and Fred McGriff were the guests of honour at this fun fundraiser which helps raise money for their “Building Community Through Baseball” campaign in support of young baseball fans ages 5-10.

01 – Vancouver Canadians’ player Kevin Pillar, left, has a good chance of making the Toronto Blue Jays roster this year. This day, he enjoys lunch with Vancouver Canadians Baseball League commissioner Bill MacLagan, centre, and former Blue Jays player and MLB Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar at the Hot Seat Lunch.

02 – No doubt about it, everyone loves Mary Ann. Gilligan’s Island star Dawn Wells is easily the most adored item at this year’s boat show. And at 75 years young, she is still as sweet and beautiful as ever.

03 – Putting on the ritz for an exclusive after-hours boat show cocktail reception are M&P Yacht Centres’ Vern Fontana and general manager Jaye-Lynn Gooch.

04 – Jana MacLagan gets a cuddle from Blue Jays hero Fred McGriff as he gets ready to answer questions from the audience at the Hot Stove Luncheon.

05 – Vancouver Canadians co-owner and managing general partner Jake Kerr looks dapper as always as he takes the stage to welcome guests to the Hot Stove Luncheon.

06 – Taking guests for a tour of M&P Yacht Centres’ $1.5 million dollar yacht, complete with accompanying silver Ferrari, Anya Morozova, left, and Esther Reich look after the VIPs.

  • Whistler’s Cornucopia 2012 Parties, Wines and Food

For the last 10+ years now I’ve had the privilege of attending Whistler’s annual Cornucopia festival of food and wine. Not for the faint of heart, those who venture beyond Cornucopia’s serious side will find a high energy, full throttle weekend affair full of alcohol and after hours activities that go well into the wee hours of the night. So, as expected, this year’s organizers stopped at nothing to put on the glitz with a whirlwind schedule of seminars, winemaker’s dinners, ultra after-parties, and non-stop fun.

The new High Rollers gala party, held at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler (tix $150), was one of the biggest featuring showgirls, gaming tables, live music and more. I especially liked the entertainment which included a live band complete with horn section – a welcome change, in my opinion, from the usual non-stop, mindless boom-boom beats.

Hanging out at the wine bar felt extra chic as guests lounged on fiber optic electric furniture that changed colour every few minutes (I’ve seriously got to get me some of this). Some complaints resulted because bartenders were bound by our archaic BC Liquor laws and were only permitted to pour small tasting samples instead of full glasses. Drink tickets were issued at the door for various other bar stations, so here’s hoping maybe next year they will include some options for full wine glasses as well.

All around the room, Vegas style showgirls go-go danced on stage while dealers held down all kinds of gambling tables, including several Texas Hold ‘Em games that proved very popular with the men folk. Going “all in” here was relatively harmless though as all games were strictly funny money.

Overall, it was an extremely classy affair which was very professionally produced. Nothing seemed to get too out of hand and I really hope it will be back next year.

Next up was the Crush Grand Gala Tasting room. Held over two nights (Friday and Saturday, tix $89), this event is aptly named as crowds literally crush themselves into the Whistler Convention Centre to sample libations from over 50 different wineries. Not a great event for food, there is nonetheless interesting little sample bites from featured companies and restaurants looking to show off their newest products. Sipping always prevails over spitting, but guests here are encouraged not to over imbibe and taxi rides are always available.

Last big event of the weekend for me was the Araxi Bubbles + Oceans party in Whistler Village (tix $155). Known for their famous sushi and seafood, this restaurant sampling event never disappoints. Tons of fresh prawns, tuna, oysters and maki rolls were available for everyone. Bar and food service was stellar and, not forgetting the bubbles part, there were several different champagne and sparkling wine samples to be had.

Stealing the spotlight this night however was a 50 year James Bond special edition anniversary champagne released by none other than Bollinger. This $200 dollar stealth black bottle comes in a special spy themed canister where one must dial 007 on the locks to release the lid. Add a couple of tuxedo-clad handsome men to serve it up cold and the ladies were easily wooed over to this table with little resistance.

  • Richard Branson in Vancouver and Real Housewives at Dining for Dreams Gala

Richard bransonIt was a British invasion of sorts last week as Sir Richard Branson was back in Vancouver for the launch of Virgin Atlantic. Branson became one of the city’s most overexposed as he arrived in style on the jet early morning to greet Premier Christy Clark. Then it was lunch with the Board of Trade followed by a charity photo op with Glee star Cory Monteith. A private VIP evening reception was then followed by the party of all parties at the Commodore featuring young UK singer Conor Maynard. Also last week, it was the BC Centre for Ability’s Dining for Dreams gala. Chaired by CTV news anchor Tamara Taggart, the evening also featured Real Housewives of Vancouver star and West Vancouverite Ronnie Seterdahl Negus and her daughter Remington. Congrats to all involved.

02 – Living life as an adventurer is hard work. Just ask Sir Richard Branson who went from early morning until late night greeting guests and VIPs in Vancouver at the launch of Virgin Atlantic.

03 – Helping support the BC Centre of Ability are West Vancouverites Richard and Heidi Coglan at the Dining for Dreams gala at the Four Seasons.

04 – Real Housewives of Vancouver star Reiko Mackenzie is known for her fast cars and fabulous fitness regime. This night, she and husband Sunny are thrilled to be supporting the BC Centre for Ability.

05 – Mother Ronnie Seterdahl Negus has spent the last nine years looking after daughter Remington’s special needs. But nothing was so frightening for the family as last February when ‘Remy’ almost died in Ronnie’s arms due to a piece of steak that had lodged itself in her windpipe and then lung. Thankfully, Remington recovered and this night mother and daughter are pairing up to support Dining for Dreams.

06 – Event chair Tamara Taggart, left, a mother of three herself, teams up with fellow CTV news gal Mi-Jung Lee who is happy to be the evening’s MC.

07 – Musician Dave Genn, of 54-40 and Matthew Good Band fame, left, chats with CTV news anchor Mike Killeen, who hails from North Vancouver, at the Dining for Dreams gala.

  • Cat Barr on Global TV with Sophie Lui

I had so much fun with Sophie Lui on Global TV last Saturday (Feb 20, 2010).

With all the Olympic celeb and parties in town, we got a chance to talk live on the air from Robson Square about all the excitement around town.

I even got a chance to show off a few pictures too of celebrities like Cindy Crawford, Sir Richard Branson, gold medal athletes Shawn Johnson and Kristi Yamaguchi and HSH Prince Albert of Monaco.

Here’s hoping we’ll be able to do it again!!!

Big thanks Sophie, you are a blast!

  • In Memory of Georgian Luger Nodar Kumaritashvili

I was brimming with pride, watching the Olympic torch live on TV as it made its way through the streets of Vancouver when it happened.

Breaking News – Olympic Luger Killed in Training Run

My joy quickly turned to sorrow. Then the pictures came. Stunning – shocking – devastating.

How could a day filled with such elation turn so quickly into a day of mourning?

Now, with a city on the brink of the biggest celebration in its history, a black cloud has cast an overwhelming and undeniable shadow over all the excitement.

And as Olympic officials hold press conferences and scramble to adjust an Opening Ceremony that is mere hours away, everyone waits – conflicted in their feelings and lost in the ability to handle the range of emotions.

My thoughts will be with the friends and family of Nodar Kumaritashvili for the rest of this day, but in honour of his memory I have decided to cheer even louder and even stronger at tonight’s Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony.

Please pass the word, cheer loud and strong, and let all of tonight’s athletes know we salute them in their pursuit of Olympic dreams.

Of the many Olympic moments to come, I believe this could be our finest hour.

  • Olympic Athletes Reunion Reception Vancouver 2010

Five time Olympian Charmaine Crooks was the perfect host last night at a special Olympic Athletes reunion event in Vancouver’s Chinatown district. It was a royal reception to be sure with names like HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and King Constantine II of Greece who attended along with his wife, Queen Anne Marie of Denmark. Pomp and ceremony aside, the evening also included appearances by former US Olympic gold medal skater Kristi Yamaguchi and teamate Paul Wylie as well as US gold medal Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson. Both Yamaguchi and Johnson are also champion Dancing With The Stars competitors which added an unusual but fun twist to the reunion themed evening.

  • USA Gold Medal Snowboarder Shaun White on Letterman

Vancouver’s Olympic snow woes continue, and now they’ve hit the big time.

Tuesday night, USA Gold Medal snowboarder Shaun White appeared on David Letterman. The interview concluded with the two men laughing about rumours that Vancouver doesn’t have enough snow up at the Cypress mountain half pipe venue and joking about snow being flown in by helicopter and the run being built out of hay.

Little do they know, they speak the truth.

  • VANOC apologizes to Vancouver Symphony for Discord

Vancouver’s Olympic Organizing Committee (VANOC) has issued a clarifying statement designed to quieten the chorus of public dissent that appears to be growing around Bramwell Tovey and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s (VSO) apparent ceremonial snub.

The apology was issued in a press release on Saturday Dec 19, 2009 after the public had learned that VANOC had asked both Tovey and the VSO to record performance music for the Opening Ceremonies. This music would then be performed by stand-in musicians conducted by a stand-in conductor live for the cameras.

The statement reads, “VANOC apologizes to the VSO for putting the orchestra in an untenable position regarding the Opening Ceremonies.”

“VANOC regrets that the complex technical requirements of the Opening Ceremonies have put the VSO in a difficult position and both parties wish to move forward in the spirit of preparing for the great Games ahead.”

John Furlong, VANOC CEO, echoes the sentiment by saying, “Bramwell Tovey and the VSO have been with us throughout this remarkable journey, . . . and it has never been our intent to put them, or any of our partners in a compromised position.”

“We know that the VSO will be a celebrated partner in what promises to be an unforgettable experience.”

Tovey and the VSO, who won the 2008 GRAMMY Award for “Best Instrumental Soloist(s) with Orchestra”, received an outflowing of support from the public who applauded his refusal to play along.

Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter showed even more support and echoed the sentiment. Many referenced the incident at the Beijing 2006 opening ceremonies where it was discovered that 9-year old Lin Miaoke had lip-synched her song because she was deemed to be “prettier” than the original singer.

    lin-yang
    Beijing 2006 Lip-synch girl

Looks aside, it looks as though these two parties have chosen to support each other and will now work towards promoting the games in perfect harmony. There is no word yet on what changed between the two parties or why Tovey wasn’t being considered as the conductor in the first place.

Some members of the VSO will be taking part in the Opening Ceremony and the VSO’s recorded renditions of the national anthems of all participating nations will be played at all the medal ceremonies.

    By Cat Barr

Here is the press release issued in its entirety below:

Vancouver 2010/VSO clarify ceremonies participation; Highlight VSO’s important contribution to 2010 games

VANCOUVER, Dec. 19 /CNW/ – The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) will play a prominent role at the 2010 Winter Games and will showcase its musicians’ talent to the world both through the Cultural Olympiad, and the playing of over 90 national anthems. VANOC regrets that the complex technical requirements of the Opening Ceremonies have put the VSO in a difficult position and both parties wish to move forward in the spirit of preparing for the great Games ahead.

Hundreds of musicians – many of whom are also members of the VSO – have joined with other musicians and artists from across Canada and around the world to contribute to the rich, diverse sound of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, some of which has been and is currently being recorded, and will also be played live. VANOC apologizes to the VSO for putting the orchestra in an untenable position regarding the Opening Ceremonies.

Under the direction of conductor Bramwell Tovey, the GRAMMY and Juno award winning Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will be showcased as part of the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad and – perhaps the greatest honor – has recorded the renditions of the national anthems of all participating nations to be played at the Games, including at Team Welcome Ceremonies in the Athlete Villages and medal presentation ceremonies both in the sport venues and at Victory Ceremonies at BC Place and Whistler Celebration Plaza.

“The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is proud to be an integral part of the 2010 Games and wish every success to VANOC,” said Tovey. “The VSO is making a significant contribution to the musical memories of the Games and our collaboration with VANOC is one of the most important in the orchestra’s long and distinguished history.”

“Bramwell Tovey and the VSO have been with us throughout this remarkable journey, from the bid phase on through, and it has never been our intent to put them, or any of our partners in a compromised position,” said John Furlong, VANOC CEO. “Whether through the Ceremonies, or the VSO recording of the anthems or the concerts of the Cultural Olympiad, the Games offer the opportunity for collaboration and a true showcase of the VSO members, who may perform or be heard individually on occasion or as a whole. We know that the VSO will be a celebrated partner in what promises to be an unforgettable experience.”

The Opening Ceremony takes place on February 12 and the Closing Ceremony takes place on February 28th. The VSO performs throughout the Cultural Olympiad 2010, including two feature performances of Mahler Symphony No. 8: Symphony of a Thousand January 30th and February 1st 2010.
