  • Singer Chantal Kreviazuk Headlines Baldy Hughes Gala

It’s called a “Therapeutic Community” and it works. Inspired and modelled on the San Patrignano community in Italy, the Baldy Hughes centre is a highly-effective, year-long addiction treatment facility located outside Prince George. It was brought to life by former West Vancouver businessman and founding member Kevin England and a team of philanthropic citizens who are part of the BC New Hope Recovery Society. Their mandate, treat addiction while emphasizing a return to positive citizenship. “Being part of something greater than themselves and being held accountable – often for the first time in their lives – is a transformational experience for these men, many who were thought to be beyond hope” says England. Last month, a Gratitude Celebration Gala was held at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver featuring Juno-award winning singer Chantal Kreviazuk. With passion and grace, Kreviazuk helped the society raise money for the ongoing support of this facility which is offered free of charge to qualifying men in need of support. • Arthritis Society Celebrates Dr. Ross Petty Chair

We’ve all heard of arthritis, but too often we think on it as an old person’s condition. And contrary to popular belief, children are also affected by an equally debilitating form of the disease, better known as Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). However, thanks to the generosity of many families and donors, The Arthritis Society – BC & Yukon Division, definitely has something to celebrate. After raising $5 million, the Ross Petty Research Chair for Pediatric Rheumatology has now been established at the University of British Columbia (UBC). This legacy fund will now ensure that children get help sooner and will further ensure continued funding and research of the 40+ years of work that Dr. Petty has already dedicated to finding a cure. A small celebration marked the occasion as friends, family and dignitaries toasted this milestone moment together.

  • West Vancouver Foundation Appreciation Reception

Since 1979, the West Vancouver Foundation has helped shape our community. Through donations and endowment funds, the foundation has supported many worthy causes and has helped bring donors together with other heritage, non-profit organizations and community projects. Scholarships and grants are also part of the giving process and many groups and individuals alike have them to thank for this generosity. Last week, at West Vancouver’s Capilano Golf and Country Club, the foundation held a special appreciation reception. Mayor Michael Smith started the evening off with the surprise announcement that he would be donating his recent council pay raise to the foundation (that amounts to about $9,000 a year). But the surprises didn’t stop there as foundation chair Gerry Humphries announced the installment of the new McLaren Family Trust – a $501,000 fund given by the family in memoriam of their mother. Congrats to all involved.

  • Family Services of North Shore Christmas Celebration

For over 60 years now, Family Services of the North Shore has been raising money and helping people in our community. Out of work, family distress, counselling and more are all part of what they provide to people in need. Needless to say, the holidays are an extra special time and being there to support families is very important. That’s why the great people at Family Services created the Christmas Bureau section just for this very cause. Last week, at a special “Christmas on the Shore” event, VIP guests and supporters donated $1,000 per couple and came out to enjoy an evening together at The Beach House restaurant in West Vancouver. Thanks to the generosity of the Fuller family (who are owners at the Beach House), everything this night was donated to this cause, including five-star food and more. A live auction this night also included amazing gifts like a Ross Penhall original artwork, an iPhone 5 and a corporate box for the upcoming Lady Gaga concert. Congrats to everyone involved.

  • Real Housewives of Vancouver Mary Zilba Sings “Hero” for son Chase

You know her as the former beauty queen and singer on The Real Housewives of Vancouver, but Mary Zilba is out to prove that she’s more than just a pretty face as she fights for her son Chase in the battle against epilepsy.

Speaking in Yaletown at The Amethyst Soiree for Epilepsy and Seizure Education, Zilba debuted her newest single “Hero” in front of a packed house. Son Chase accompanied her on the guitar. Invited guests and VIPs came out in support of her cause.

As a busy working mom who has raised three boys (Cole 17, Chase 15 and Chad 13), Zilba was quick to point out that although the song is based on Chase, she thinks on all of her children as her heroes and she empathizes with other parents going through similar struggles.

So what is life like now that “Real Housewives” is on the air? Zilba admits to being a little surprised at the results and just how much the editing can affect the outcome. “I’m human, and I got caught up in the drama,” she says shyly.

And for all those wondering if the “Housewives” are really friends, you’ll have to watch to find out the answer.

The 25th annual Crystal Ball gala, in support of BC Children’s Hospital, marked its’ anniversary year with a special plea to help support the development of a new BC Children’s Hospital. The ballroom at the Four Seasons Hotel was transformed into a silvery wintery wonderland as guests enjoyed a champagne reception and a four course meal. Live and silent auction items were bid on to raise funds, then guests were invited to visit the specially set-up ultra lounge where dessert and disco-dancing finished off the evening in style. Congrats to everyone involved.

  • Juvenile Diabetes Rockin for Research Gala at Hyatt Hotel Vancouver

vancouver_canucks_mike_gillis.jpgThe Hyatt hotel ballroom was transformed into a twinkling festival of lights earlier this month as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) celebrated its’ 12th Annual Rockin’ For Research gala. With the theme “Paris Under the Stars”, it was a night to remember as guests gathered to raise money for this very worthwhile cause. The silent auction cocktail party was a great place to start shopping, but so was the live auction which featured some big ticket items including celebrity chefs and sports stars. Later on it was dancing till dawn to the sweet sounds of Vancouver’s Famous Players band. Congrats to all involved.
