  • Variety Gala Golden Heart Community Achievement Dinner for Global TV 50 Years

    Chris_Gailus.jpgThe Golden Heart award is Variety – The Children’s Charity’s “most prestigious mark of distinction”. Every year, at this elegant gala affair, groups and individuals are honoured for their commitment to excellence and for their philanthropic contributions to British Columbians. This year, it was time to honour Global TV BC for over 50 years of service. From their first on-air broadcast on Oct 31, 1960 to their work with the Show of Hearts Telethon, they have become a household name and a leader in all they do. Here’s a toast to some of the many North Shore citizens who are part of this success story. Congrats to all involved.

    01 – Global BC’s newest anchor man Chris Gailus is surrounded by beauty and brains as fellow co-workers/anchors Sophie Lui, left, Deb Hope, weather gal Kristi Gordon and Anne Drewa enjoy the gala festivities.

    02 – Outgoing Premier Gordon Campbell is greeted at the reception by Variety Executive Director Barbara Hislop.

    03 – West Vancouver’s Wendy Lisogar-Cocchia, seen here with daughter Connie and husband Sergio, is one of many speakers this evening. Wendy is also owner of Absolute Spa and the senior vice-chair of the Vancouver Board of Trade.

    04 – At 92-years young, bandleader Dal Richards and wife Miriam are among the evening’s VIPs.

    05 – Did you know that the lights on the Lions Gate Bridge are called “Gracie’s Pearls” after former Socred MLA Grace McCarthy? Seen here with husband Ray, she continues to give back via her CH.I.L.D. Foundation.

    06 – Volunteering for over 20 years with Variety are two of the charity’s most elegant ladies; Barbara Stewart, left, and West Vancouver’s Arline McFarlane.

    07 – Former North Shore newsman turned communications manager Michael Becker, seen here with sweetheart Tracy Forbes, now spends his days raising money with the United Way.

    08 – They’re the main men behind this night’s award ceremonies. North Vancouver’s Brett Manlove, left, Vice President and GM of Global BC Broadcast Operations and Ian Haysom, News Director, take home the 24k gold flecked statue for a job very well done.

    Back in 1995, a shocking headline about child labour spurred then 12 year-old Craig Kielburger into starting the Free The Children foundation. Today, along with brother Marc, these young men have literally managed to inspire a nation of youth to take action. At the first inaugural We Vancouver event, the Kielburger brothers were joined by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and other international celebrities to talk to more than 16,000 Vancouver students between the ages of 12-17 about their “Ten by Ten” campaign and the call for “compassion, courage and community”.     01 – His Holiness the Dalai Lama talks to the students on stage with founder Craig Kielburger.

    02 – Sarah McLachlan is one of the musical headliners for this special day of awareness.

    03 – At 75 years young, Dame Jane Goodall still travels the planet talking about her time with the chimpanzees and importance of world conservation.

    04 – Jason Mraz, known for his hit song “I’m Yours”, wows the young audience with his performance.

    05 – The Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, welcomes over 16,000 youths speaking in both French and English.

    06 – CTV’s Tanya Kim speaks with BC Premier Gordon Campbell who encourages everyone to go out fight for change that is right.

    07 – Formerly married to both Frank Sinatra and Woody Allen, actress turned activist Mia Farrow describes the horrific conditions and cruelty she witnessed when in the Africa.

    08 – Event chair Lorne Segal and wife Melita have lots to be proud of as they wait to meet the Dalai Lama backstage. Son Matthew is one of the few students who got to ask the Dalai Lama a question live in front of the audience.

    09 – Young and charming, the cast of Degrassi: The Next Generation came out in support of the new era for change. Scott Paterson, Sam Earle, Dalmar Abuzeid, Raymond Ablack.

  • 22nd Annual Women’s Media Golf

    Sure, it’s all about the fun and the fairways, but when it comes time to making a kids’ dream come true, these gals go for the green. West Van’s Wendy Cocchia is the powerhouse behind The 22nd Annual Women’s Media Golf Classic and she knows firsthand how hard it can be to raise a child with special needs. The after reception party, which was held at her and husband Sergio’s Beyond Restaurant and Lounge in the Century Plaza Hotel, is always a celebration of life, but never more than this year. Dream Wishes granted this year included a trip to Disneyland for Chantal and a newly trained PADS golden lab dog for Jake – and tears of joy for everyone in attendance. (more…)

  • Vancouver Doormen’s Dinner

    They know where all the best restaurants are, where all the movies stars stay and can probably help you get front row tickets to just about any event in town. They are Vancouver’s doormen, and without them, we’d be a city without a face. Last month, at the 18th Annual Doormens Dinner, these ambassadors were honoured for their great service and hard work. Sponsored by Grace McCarthy’s CH.I.L.D (CHildren with Intenstinal and Liver Disorders) foundation, and held at Vancouver’s Four Seasons Hotel, this was one fundraiser where extra baggage was encouraged.
