Khakis and cocktail dresses were on my marching orders last week as one of the most spectacular gala evenings ever to hit Vancouver was held in honour of the True Patriot Love Foundation. “Operation Western Front” was co-chaired by businessmen Warren M. Spitz and W. Brett Wilson (of CBC’s Dragons’ Den fame). Together they turned the Vancouver Convention Centre into a quasi military style forward operation base complete with camo, ammo and Hollywood glam-o. During the elegant reception, guests were more than moved by artist Dave Sopha’s “Portraits of Honour” (www.portraitsofhonour.ca) – a massive tribute to the fallen in Afghanistan. Then, a real live patrolling helicopter buzzed the ballroom outside the windows ordering everyone to take their military dinner tray to the five-star buffet line for “chow time”. A touching tribute by singer John McDermott and a lively auction featuring KISS rock star Gene Simmons helped round out a special evening that raised over $1.5 million for military families and veterans in need. Congrats to all involved.

KISS lead man and “Family Jewels” reality TV star Gene Simmons and life partner / Playboy playmate Shannon Tweed come out to support their friend Brett Wilson and all of the Canadian military families through the True Patriot Love foundation (TruePatriotLove.com).

When West Vancouverite Sharon Chan-Knight and her business partner Tammy Preast, of Ask a Woman Enterprises, set out to raise money for breast cancer, they never thought they’d end up here. And while these resourceful gals are no strangers to party planning (having helped plan the West Vancouver Library’s annual croquet gala and more), they decided to shoot for the stars with a dual Prêt-a-Pour-Tea / Prêt-A-Pour-Nuit double bill. Last week, guests and VIPs were invited to the chic Bohemian lair of artist Pamela Masik to celebrate the fifth annual “Tea”, followed by an inaugural gala evening “Nuit”. Famous faces like actors Steve Bacic (Andromeda) and Erin Karpluk (Being Erica) were joined by featured speakers Brett “Dragons’ Den” Wilson and rocker/cancer survivor Bif Naked. Congrats to all involved.
Words almost can’t describe it. At first, it was sheer excitement at the site of the colourful Moroccan themed private tent suites. Then, it was pride as opening acts like the Sarah McLachlan Foundation Choir took to the stage and cruise ships sailed past Ambleside beach. Finally, as night falls on a near perfect day, it was magic as Sheryl Crow, Neil Young and Sarah McLachlan, three of the biggest names in music, performed to a sold-out crowd the likes of which we have never seen here in West Vancouver. It was a once in a lifetime VIP experience that I hope we get to do all over again next year, and next, and next. Congrats to everyone involved.
