Penguin Plunge 2002

IT's a New Year's Day tradition that has taken place for 11 years now. The Penguin Plunge in North Vancouver's Deep Cove is our own North Shore version of the famous Polar Bear Swim. There were 302 actual registrants, but by the looks of things, many more went into the water. Sponsored by the District of North Vancouver, the Mount Seymour Lions Club and the local merchants, the event is great family fun. Hot dogs and hot chocolate were served which helped raise over $1,660 which will be donated to the Canadian Mental Health Association, Canora Club. Congratulations to everyone who participated.

Don't call them rookies. Jim Caruth (back left) and Mike Ellis have done the plunge for six years each now. Eight-year-old Brooke Caruth (left), who was a first-timer last year, welcomed her brother Marc to the scene this year.

Ten-year-old Suzanne Ellis tested the waters for the first time last year. She was back this year, brave as ever.

Who let the dogs out? Daria Duprey (from left), John Teahen and Doug Little really got into the part much to the surprise of Doug's daughter Karina.

Andrew Harnden, who has done the plung three times now, brought along his son Rhyse who preferred to stay dry and act as coach.
