Ambleside Ice Hole

IT may not be as big as English Bay's Polar Bear Swim, but the 9th annual Ambleside Ice Hole event saw lots of people come out on January 1 to take the plunge and start the New Year off on a fresh foot. Young and old came out to test the waters making this a true family event. And while some just went in for a quickie, others managed to swim along the beach and spalsh around for a while. Maybe the sunshine helped coax a few more hearty souls into the water (it was a great day weather wise). Everyone walking on the beach stopped to watch as the horn sounded and the race to the water began. Happy New Year!

Colin Craig, seen here with Celina Costa, said this is his second year at the event. Maybe next year he can convince Celina to come in as well.

Five-and-a-half year old Coral More was happy to brave the waves with her dad, Gord More.

Connie Cooper has been doing this for four years now. She finally managed to convince her son Matthew to come along for his first time.

Shawn Long has been doing the Polar Bear swim for close to 17 years. This year she and her children, four year old Cassidy (left) and seven year old Chase decided to come to Ambleside instead and swim together.

Nine years ago, Dave Alavoine (left) started the Ice Hole Swim event. Ryan Godding (right) has jumped in six times since.

Dave Evans and his mom, Marie Nastasi, have been doing this every year since he was little. All in all, they said the water "wasn't bad."

Cathy Harvey (left) was the official starter who blew the horn and got things going. She came out with Barb Raynor (centre), mom Joyce Macey (right) and Josh Goulding (front).

Seve year old Cole Rothenbush (left) took a dip wearing his dad's shirt, but mom Janice and five year old sister Clair chose to watch from the beach.

Building sand castles was also part of the fun as Lilian and Leif Leopold will tell you.

Taking in the action from the comfort of the shore was Margaret Gradowska and her canine companion Sushi.
