Indy Race Weekend 2000

INDY Weekend is always a great chance to get out and meet the stars, both on and off the track. This year, the parties started early as tributes to the late Greg Moore starting pouring in. Lots of North Shore locals were rubbing elbows with the celebs. There was the Thursday night gala evening at Gotham's restaurant, the Friday night Driver's Party at the Keg Ceasars, and the Dave Rutledge post-race party at the West Vancouver Keg. On race day, it was up to the exclusive skysuites where we all got the chance to hang out with Wayne Gretzky himself.

Local actor Richard Dean Anderson (centre right), bought Greg Moore's racing helmet for $57,000 at the gala auction. Later he and race driver Jimmy Vasser (left), Greg's father Ric Moore (centre left) and driver Dario Franchitti spoke with me about the moment.
North Van's Darryl Weinbren (centre), seen here with Gregor Mowatt and Stefanie Gretsinger, is president of Maxxium Canada. They supplied the champagne for the Gotham's event.
Michael Buble (right) is Vancouver's answer to Frank Sinatra. His band included North Van businessman and drummer Gary Mussatto.
You can always count on David Aisenstat (of Gotham/Keg fame) to throw a good party and impress the crowds.

Wayne Gretzky was only too happy to autograph an original LeRoy Neiman portrait of himself for Colin Ferguson, of Diamonds Direct. Colin, his wife Julie and Gretzky were the starting announcers for the race.
North Van's own Bobbi Smith (right), seen here with mom Karen, was fabulous when she sang the national anthems at the start of the race.
