Bruno Gerussi - Catherine Barr

He is probably best remembered for his renowed television role as Nick on CBC's long-running series "The Beachcombers", but those who knew Bruno Gerussi know that he was much more. Gerussi, and longtime companion Madame Justice Nancy Morrison, were the perfect North Shore couple. Now, in honour of his memory, Nancy has helped established the Bruno Gerussi Brusary Fund for the National Theatre School of Canada. Last Saturday, in the atrium of the Law Courts Building downtown, the second annual Bruno Gerussi Beachcomber Party was held. Notables from all across Canada came out to toast his work and celebrate his life.

It was positively thrilling to have "Royal Canadian Air Farce" comedian Roger Abbot co-host the evening. His impressions of the Queen Mother, the Newfie Newsman and the "Oh yah, Oh yah" Donut Guy are legendary.

Co-host Julie Stewart, who was nominated for a Gemini award for her portrayal of Sgt. Ali McCormick in "Cold Squad", was once a National Theatre School student.

He's a bit of a "Canadian Establishment" himself. North Shore resident and best-selling author Peter C. Newman, seen here with wife Alvy, wrote a "Salute to a Beachcomber", a touching piece which was read aloud before dinner.

Justice Nancy Morrison was Bruno's longtime partner and friend. It was a special kind of love that lives on to this day.

The multi-talented musician/actor/journalist John MacLachlin Gray, who later performed some music for the guests, used to compose and perform satirical video for CBC's "The Journal".
